“Bem” is the second remake of the late 60s “Youkai Ningen Bem”. The first remake was in 2006 and I only watched two episodes before I dropped it. I can’t remember why, but then after 13 years that’s not too surprising. (I’m lucky to be able to remember what I ate for breakfast nowadays… LOL)
“Bem” is the story of three youkai who are trying to do good deeds and save humans from evil so that they can eventually become human themselves. Their work is cut out for them – they are in a “Gotham City” sort of place where corruption is the rule and there is evil everywhere. At the same time an honest police woman is sent to the worst part of the city because she was making waves and she gets caught up with a fight between Bem, the leader of the three youkai, and a murderous water youkai. But the police woman only sees Bem as another monster to be feared.
The show has the most stylish opening animation that I’ve seen in an anime in years. The general approach to the show is very “noir”, like an updated “Big O”. There is a lot of action and the animation is generally good. The character designs are contemporary. This is the last of the new Summer 2019 anime series that I intended to try out and it looks interesting enough that I will stick around for a bit. My initial rating is B+.
