“Vinland Saga” is a historical anime based upon a long running manga. The story is set during the endless petty wars in the Baltic region and England during the height of the Norse expansion around 1000 AD. Various historical personages from the Norse sagas appear with much of the story revolving around Thorfinn Karlsefni.
The first episode contrasts violent medieval warfare with the sometimes pastoral but very harsh lives of the Norse settlers in Iceland at the beginning of the second millennium. Norse explorers had already made limited trips to northeastern North America, tales of which fascinate young Thorfinn and fuel his thirst for adventure, but the realities of the continued expansion of Norse royal power threatens to remove the independence of the Icelandic settlers.
The first episode was reasonably well done in a very heroic and earnest manner just like the manga. I’ve checked out chapters in the manga from time to time over the past 14 years but that very heroic and earnest manner kept me from warming up to it. The anime looks to be similar so I’m not going to follow it. My final rating is C+.
