The Spring 2019 anime season is over and it was a mixed bag for me. I’m not following as many shows as I used to follow and even with that winnowing I still ended up watching some irritating and mediocre series. So here are my thoughts on the shows that I did watch.

Finished Series:

“One Punch Man Season 2” – There was a huge amount of whining and complaining about the animation quality of OPM S2 but I don’t watch this series for the animation any more than I follow One’s web manga for the artwork. This is a brilliantly biting social satire at many levels going from Japanese society in general to shounen fighting anime and manga in detail. The point is not the fighting. The point and jokes revolve around the fact that Saitama is the Buddha and doesn’t know it. My final rating for the second series is A.

“Dororo” – This modern adaptation of an old Tezuka historical horror/fantasy manga was a well-done ride all the way. Good animation, excellent voice acting and fluid action scenes made the series satisfying to watch week after week. My final rating is A-.

“Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin” – This contemporary fantasy series had a great strength going for it right from the beginning – it was about adult characters in adult situations. It’s a good example of how to execute a “what if” premise very consistently. My final rating is B+.

“Gunjou no Magmel” – This adaptation of a Chinese “what if” manga was one of the more ineptly written series that I’ve watched all the way through to the end. This was fan-fiction level writing. The writers took a promising premise and wasted it. My final rating is C-.

New Continuing Series:

“Fruits Baskets (2019)” – This reboot of a nearly 20 year old tear-jerker shoujo fantasy has been better than I expected. Somehow, all of the old irritations of the original anime are being handled smoothly and professionally enough that they don’t seem so irritating this time around. My rating after 13 episodes is B+.

“Kimetsu no Yaiba” – This modern shounen magical fighting fantasy has great animation and a lot of action. Unfortunately it also has constant stoppage of the action for internal monologues, endless and pointless back stories and also overwhelmingly irritating side-kicks. I’ve peeked at the on-going manga and it is still doing the pretty much the same thing at chapter 168 so I don’t want to struggle through more of the same. Therefore I am dropping the series after episode 13 and my final rating is B-.

And Still Watching:

“Meitantei Conan” at episode 945, “One Piece” at episode 891 and “GeGeGe no Kitaro (2018) at episode 62.
