iMac G3 wan't recognize video files? [message #383496] Thu, 02 May 2019 11:41 Go to next message

I am borrowing an iMac G3 with Mac OS 9.1 as a prop for a film. I need to
play a video file in the computer for the film, but I am having the hardest
time getting a video file onto the computer. When I open a CD that I burned
it will show some files like JPEG images, but the video files that I burned
onto the CD don't appear. I've tried several different codecs/formats
including h264, MP4, MOV, and AVI, all with simple file names and no
special characters, but none of them show up on the CD when loaded in the
old iMac, even though they are definitely on the CD.

I've also tried other methods of transferring the video file including
flash drive (doesn't show up or mount when I format it to various formats).
I can't figure out how to connect the iMac to the internet to
email/download the file. And I can't figure out how to transfer it directly
via an ethernet cable connected to my modern iMac. So burning a CD is the
closest I've come, but the video files just won't show up.

Help?

Thanks,
Adam

Adam,

I may be wrong, but aren't the old G3 iMacs capable of "target mode"? Try
holding down the "T" key while powering up the G3. I believe this turns it
in to an external firewire drive. Connect that to the modern iMac.

That's a pretty weird problem. What OS version are you creating the video
and CD with, and what version of Quicktime or other video player do you
have on the OS9 iMac?

For flash drives - have you tried formatting it on the old iMac or just on
the new one?

Network - easiest option is probably to turn on the built-in FTP server on
one of the iMacs and access from the other machine.
If you want to connect the machines directly together without putting them
on a network you will probably need to configure the network settings
manually with static IPs, and it may require a cross-over cable instead of
straight - if you can put them both on a local wifi network I think that
would be easier. Apologies if you've already tried any of these options.

For any transfer option, you might try putting the video file in a dmg or
binhex (.hqx) in order to make sure it transfers through OK.

This link may also help to get to a format the iMac can play back - h264 at
least I'm sure is out of the question, but the newer mp4 and MOV may also
have issues.

Format the flash drive on the iMac, then copy onto it from something else
(not windows)

The filename is irrelevant, the file format is vitally important, the
version of quicktime on the iMac is the most important part. I would
suggest a quicktime .mov of the same version as on the iMac.

Cheers

Ok! So I figured out that the files weren't showing up because I burnt
those files onto the disc after I already burned files onto it. Tried
burning a fresh disc and they showed up!

However it looks like this version of quicktime doesn't have a true full
screen view where it shows nothing but the video. I can make it "Fill
Screen" which just maximizes the video, but I can still see the menu bar,
player controls etc. Can anyone recommend a video player that will work
that has a true full screen view?

I think QuickTime Pro allows this, but I'd be surprised if the upgrade is still possible. Leonard Rosenthol of Aladdin Systems wrote a movie player called Popcorn back in the 1990s, but I can't find a download for it.

What's your timetable on this? It shouldn't be too hard to build a QuickTime movie player from scratch.

I need this by early next week. I wouldn't know how to build a QuickTime
player from scratch. Is there a way to manually zoom into the screen to
fake full screen? I know you can do this in modern macs by holding command
and scrolling.

I believe that was added in Jaguar. Classic Mac OS has had its own implementation, CloseView, since System 6, I think. It might be an optional install in OS 9, but it may do what you need.

As for building a QuickTime movie player for OS 9, I could do this. (I'm the developer of MacRelix and Advanced Mac Substitute.) Shall we continue offline?

I can make it "Fill Screen" which just maximizes the video, but I can still see the menu bar, player controls etc. Can anyone recommend a video player that will work that has a true full screen view?

The easiest solution is to install QuickTime MoviePlayer 2.5.1 ( http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/movie-player-251-movieplayer) which is the last version before the "Pro" features were paywalled. It'll work with any later version of Classic MacOS and QuickTime.

I figured out I can stretch the display beyond the borders of the monitor
in Control Panel > Monitor. So I can play the video almost full screen in
QT Player and then stretch the display so the controls are off screen. Not
a pretty solution, but it works! Thanks for all your help everyone.
