“Sarazanmai” is the latest anime from Kunihiko Ikuhara and as one would expect it is not your “usual” anime. Three middle school boys happen to irritate an accidently awakened kappa prince who steals the shirikodamas from the boys. The kappa prince then orders the boys to recover “desires” from zombie kappas that are stealing desires in the form of shipping boxes. We then get musical action scenes, millions of bits of symbolism, and some hints of antagonists of some sort.
It’s an Ikuhara anime, and like his most recent work, style takes precedence over substance in a big way. Which is too bad because the visual style is quite remarkable. But do I care about 12 year olds agonizing over “connections” or their own gender identity? Not really.
BTW – the ending animation reminded me a lot of the endings of recent “Meitantei Conan” movies because it used lots of high quality filmed cityscapes with bits of animation inserted in subtle ways. I’m going to watch another episode just in case some of the thought that went into the story in “Penguindrum” shows up, but I’m expecting more musical routines and repetition. My initial rating is B-.
