“Gunjou no Magmel” is a shounen action fantasy that is based upon a Chinese manwah that has been turned into a Jump on-line manga. In the near future a new and very large continent called Magmel suddenly appears in the center of the Pacific Ocean, taking up much of the area. This new continent has all sorts of life forms and materials that are not found on Earth. Various nations and individuals go to the new continent to exploit its resources, but it is a very dangerous place where one third of explorers who go there don’t return.

Thirty-five years after the appearance of Magmel there are several million people exploring and exploiting the continent. Because of the dangers a group of rescuers have been formed who are called “Anglers”. One day a boy named Chris comes to a young Angler named Inyou and asks Inyou to find Chris’s older brother who has gone missing on Magmel. After hearing Chris’s story Inyou agrees to help Chris and they go off together to the continent. Inyou’s partner/technical assistant Zero stays behind to pilot a remote flying vehicle that scouts in advance of Inyou. Inyou and Chris get to Magmel and find Chris’s brother, but at that point nothing turns out as expected.

The first episode of this series was fairly entertaining in a shounen “lost world” sort of way. It did become surprisingly dark at the end. In addition to the improbable “extra” continent it turns out that Inyou, and probably Zero, have some mysterious super powers. I’m interested enough that I’ll continue with this series for a while and my initial rating is B.
