“Shoumetsu Toshi” is a new “psi-fi” action anime that is based upon a mobile game. A strange disaster hits a major Japanese city – a large portion of the city, including buildings and inhabitants, disappears, leaving a hole in the ground about a kilometer or so in diameter. One teenaged girl escapes the disaster and become a pawn between various mysterious factions. One mysterious faction hires a guy to retrieve the girl and bring her back to the lost area of the city, but other various mysterious opponents with mysterious psi-like powers keep getting in the way.
The first episode was okay from a sci-fi/action point of view but it was very paint-by-number as far as the plotting and characterizations went. There was no real attempt at originality. The animation was pedestrian. I’ll stick around for another episode but this series hasn’t grabbed me so I doubt that I stick around longer. My initial rating is C+.
