Is it possible to change the C64 color palette,
by some software, or hardware hack?

Thanks,

Chris

Suppose it's not possible. It's all hard coded.

Why do you want this?

As Andreas K writes, no it's not possible on a real C64. You could fork an emulator like VICE for instance and change the palette to something you like. That would not be a C64 emulation but something else though.

But now I thought may be you could mess with the RF signal from the RCA
jack. Using a modern day computer and "rewrite" the signal. Don't know if
there exist ready to run solutions for this idea.

You could get or emulate a ZX Spectrum, those colors are as saturated as possible in this universe.

I remember when I was young that I couldn't determine the difference between red, orange and brown on the monitor. Maybe it's the monitor, or maybe you can change the settings in front of the monitor, i.e. the color, brightness and contrast settings. Try it. :)

Or "colorblindness". I have this too. Even when I emulate a Commodore 64
in VICE and a LCD display.

I have some WinVice C64 color palettes I created because I didn't like the default. I can e-mail them to you or post them here. Interested?

Where do you put them?

Btw. even if I have problems with the original colors I'll keep
them. Because the C64 looked like that and emulation is to bring back the
old computers with all their design flaws, unreliable hard- and software
and bugs. So I also keep the garish green of the TRS Color Computer's
display hurting my eyes. :-)

Thanks for the effort though.

You put them in separate files in the WinVice's c64\ folder. To use them, click Settings, then Video Setting, then the VicII Colors then Browse.... find and click the file then Open. Close the menus, and you have your new color scheme.

You're welcome.

I didn't even know this was possible in VICE.

Yes.

Back in the early 1990s IIRC a Polish C64 newstand magazine published a a combination hardware/software hack. It used a small software routine to adjust the colours dynamically via the RF cable spliced with the cassette port.
