Hello All!

Hope everyone is doing well on this forum. I have a quick technical
question on the early revision (Rev 1) B&W G3 Macintosh. My question
revolves around the IDE controller problem with these early revision B&W G3
macs.

I need to install a new hard drive in my Rev 1 B&W G3 and I have a SSD
drive that I have used successfully in similar applications. The problem
that I have is that this SSD is always set for "Cable Select" (there are no
jumpers for setting Master or Salve). I know that the IDE controllers in
the Rev 1 B&W G3s cannot handle 2 drives on the same bus, but that they can
handle 1 drive. What I can't remember is if it absolutely necessary to
specify the drive as Master due to the IDE controller fault on these Rev 1
G3s. In other words, can I install a drive set for Cable select in a Rev 1
B&W G3 if it is the only drive on the bus (and not run into data corruption
issues)?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

As far as I'm aware, a Cable Select drive will act exactly like a Master drive when used with a straight IDE cable, so you shouldn't have any trouble.

If I'm misremembering and it actually acts as a Slave drive, then it's still only a single drive and shouldn't cause any data corruption problems. You'll have to try it to see whether it still recognised for booting, though.
