Does anyone have any sources for repair parts for the Mac Powerbook 520?

We have an old barely working one that I thought we had disposed of, and
my ADHD/Aspergers son has latched onto it as something he wants to fix.
There are some parts on ebay, but not all that is needed.

Unfortunately, he played with my original Mac, and it no longer works. I
bought it in 1986 and over the years upgraded the power supply, added a
SCSI interface, added a hard drive, and upgraded the RAM to 1Mb. I
rarely ran it as a novelty, but it stayed working all these years. Now
it won't recognize the hard drive and has some other strange issues.

So I want to keep him away from my vintage Mac and let him have the old
Powerbook.

Do you know what parts you need?
I have a bunch of stuff in boxes in my garage, including screens, keyboards, floppy drives, dead batteries etc.
I also have an odd machine that is the 550 color with a Japanese/English keyboard along with a grayscale screen and 33mhz processor.

I've just selected every mail from that address in the past 12 months and marked them as Junk. Others should probably do the same, especially if they're on Gmail accounts (as Google should pick up on the pattern).

Confirmed, I only had to flag a couple and it's been catching them since.
I've also tried getting in touch with the spam email on the off chance it's
someone legit who is oblivious, but no luck there.

If we need to do more discussion maybe we should start a separate thread,
this topic has hi-jacked more than one recently!

Not completed sorted out yet, but the below is known...

The ribbon cable going to the floppy drive is torn. I notice that there
is one on ebay.

The hinge between the main body of the laptop and the screen is damaged.

The screen (grayscale, not color) is not right...hard to describe. Very
low contrast, bubbly.

It does boot with a color monitor plugged into it, and that works.

The batteries are dead but it will run off of the AC adapter. Any
solution on the batteries?

It would be easiest to start with a new functional machine, but my son
wants to try to fix it, and I am ok with that.

What's the best OS to run on the 520? I've noted that it crashes when
booted with extensions, but will boot to stable with extensions
off...but then you can't do anything with the machine. It looks like it
has 8.1 on it...with tons of extensions. We haven't used it for a long
time; it was my wife's machine back in the day.

Thanks,

MarkN

I'm sure  that there are more issues.

Hi Mark,
I have a 520c with a dead battery pack. I plan to have it refurbished with new cells. I've been trawling my emails looking for the guy who refurbed a clamshell iBook battery pack some years ago. All I can remember is that his surname is Polish.
On the battery front, I would definitely recommend getting it professionally done. IIRC it's NiCad but NiMH will also work in it. The battery pack place will balance everything and ensure that it charges for you. I have tried cheap eBay packs but they don't always last as long, maybe a year. That iBook battery rebuild lasted for years.
Good luck with the rest of it. I'm fortunate that mine has very little wrong with it. I do need to plug it in and check it soon. When I first used it back in 1995, I fell in love with it. I want to upgrade the HDD with an SD unit. The original borked some years ago.
Cheers,
Keith

I once, many years ago, took apart a pair of PB 190/5300 batteries. They contain a load of approximately AA-sized NiMH cells soldered or spot-welded in series, plus some electronics for type-identification and charge management.

I was able to parallel my two batteries to overcome the high resistance the old cells had developed, and actually obtained 5 hours runtime from a pair of batteries that had originally provided 1 hour each at best when new, and less than 15 mins each when aged. I take that as a sign the batteries were undersized at design time (a common problem with laptop batteries, as size/weight gets prioritised over utility). I understand a Li-Ion battery was planned for the 190/5300 but wasn't ready in time; also NiMH batteries generally last longer in years, though not in hours.

In theory, you should be able to construct a fresh battery using ordinary AA NiMH cells (get industrial tagged ones which can be soldered together, not the retail ones which need a holder) and the old casing and EEPROM. However, according to https://68kmla.org/forums/index.php?/topic/29344-powerbook-5 00-series-battery-rebuild/ the electronics in the 500-series battery is "smarter" and more finicky than the simple EEPROM I found in my batteries.

There's a lot of info in that thread, actually.

Sorry, Mark.
I've been through my emails back to 2006. Prior to that I was using a different email address and I reckon it was probably on that. They closed down their server years ago and I would have no access now.
I did try to search for battery rebuilds but pages in, nothing is familiar to me.
You might find someone more local to your location. I'm in Northern Ireland and the guy I used was in England.
Good luck in your search,
Keith

Hi Mark,
I have a 520c with a dead battery pack.
Cheers,
Keith

I've gone to the Google Groups page, and marked the messages as spam
there, too bad nothing seems to be happening.

I've had a rechargeable battery rebuilt for a tool by Batteries Plus
once, has anyone tried it with a laptop battery? That one was only a
few cells without any ICs in it, not sure if they would even be
capable of it.
