Wow! That was an impressive start to this retelling of Tezuka’s late 60s sengoku-era horror manga. A minor lord in a poor land makes a deal with demons to gain power. The lord lets the demons take parts of his newborn first son and casts the mutilated baby away. But a sympathetic old midwife gives the baby a chance to survive when she puts it into a boat that drifts away. Years later the Lord’s land is now prosperous and he is now powerful and has a second son as his heir. But things start to change when a little thief called Dororo gets caught up with a monster and is saved by a blind, mute and deaf ronin who has swords as hands and can sense demons.

MAPPA, Tezuka Productions and Twin Engine do a great job with the visuals, sound, action and general atmosphere of the first episode. The opening animation does give away one of the “secrets” of the plotline, but that isn’t a negative in any way, particularly when you consider the origin and era of the manga. The character designs are modernized Tezuka and work very well.

All-in-all, this was a very good start for this series and I’m glad that I decided to try it out. My initial rating is “A”.
