Compatible internal floppy drives for Mac Classic? [message #378404] Mon, 17 December 2018 09:08 Go to next message

It appears my Mac Classic internal floppy drive has perished (don't blame
it from it sitting outside for years). I would like to replace it so I can
use this system again.
Is there a list of compatible replacement units I can purchase and install
into this machine? There's so many to choose from on ebay and I would like
to get one that is a drop-in replacement.
Thanks!

It'll need to be one from another Mac, at minimum. Mac floppy drives have a variable-speed facility for use with 800K disks, and a motorised eject mechanism, which are both absent on PC drives.

The Classic apparently came with a "SuperDrive" which introduced the ability to read 1.44MB "high density" disks. That went along with a SWIM controller on the m/board, which remained more-or-less standard in later Macs until the floppy drive was dropped in the iMac era. I think a drive from one of these later Macs has a good chance of fitting your Classic, but others will have more specific information.

Incidentally, the Classic came with System 6.0.3 in ROM. You should be able to boot into it by holding Cmd-Opt-X-O at the chime. From there, you can use the serial ports and a SCSI HDD, in case you can't find a floppy drive for some reason.

Low End Mac, who provide this very list, have an excellent article on this:

which is a reworking of the info from this page:

which has been updated 2 years more recently

I should still have some new-old-stock floppy drives, I'll have to
check and get back to you.

Based on that, it appears you should try to get a drive from a Mac predating the Quadra/Centris lines, using the auto-inject mechanism. That should ensure the interface with the case front is correct.

Theoretically, any Mac drive should be *operable* with the Classic, but the newer manual-inject ones might require leaving the case open due to mechanical misalignment, and that's a bad idea when you've got a built-in CRT to contend with.

Often the mechanism on these old drives lock up because the lubricant turns
to varnish. If you cannot insert a disk because the mechanism does not
accept it (things don't go sprung in the right places) try removing the
drive and clean all the sliding metal parts on the two sides with alcohol
until the old residue is removed. Stay away from teh head mechanism
inside the drive. People have bent things messing with those. Oh, you
can touch them if you know what you're doing, just don't go after them
wihtout finding some good explicit instructions first.

Second, if you try to install a manual-inject drive instead of the older
auto-inject drive, I'm pretty sure you need to change the floppy cable,
otherwise the drive will go into a mode where it constantly ejects. I may
be misremembering, but there was an issue wtih floppy cables with red
stripes and floppy cables with yellow stripes.

Thanks for those tips. It does accept a floppy and attempts to read it, but
all attempts to do anything to the disc fail. I haven't had a chance to
floppy-ectomy the unit yet to inspect it up close but we'll see what my
lunch break at work looks like today. I've verified the Disc is OK in the
only Windows box I have with a floppy and it seems to successfully read and
write those discs (Although even the Windows box struggled with the only
floppy I could initially find. Maybe I should try a new in box disc)

I'm upset at past me for scrapping a pile of old computers including a few
LCII units. I know I probably still have a few floppy drives and HDDs
around somewhere, but it's been years since I had any beige mac units so my
memory of where everything went is a bit foggy.

Does formatting the disk fail? If you don't have the correct System
software version and/or the extension, the Mac won't be able to read
PC-formatted disks. Also, Macs in general were pickier about floppy
disks; a disk that works just fine on PC won't necessarily work on a
Mac, or it could fail soon thereafter on the PC after the Mac says
it's bad.

It failed on verification. Unfortunately this project is on hold until
later since my board has finally suffered the checkerboard boot pattern.
I'll need to do a recap on it before I investigate the floppy drive further.

All,
I got my Mac working again by refurbishing the Analog board after checking
voltages and discovering I was running a whopping 10V on the 12V rail.
Everything is running in spec, Floppy drive auto inject\eject works as
expected but it cannot read or format disks. It fails format on Verifying.
Is there a proper way to clean these drives or would replacement still be
my best bet?
