Half OT and half on-topic - Pre-prep for zotting a Mac LC to run the Apple //e card? [message #377792] |

I say half on topic and half off, because this deals with both Macintosh
and Apple ][ stuff.
I mentioned that I've purchased an apparently working Mac LC, into which I
intend to install the //e card (I have two). So I've got some things I'll
need to figure out for when it comes.
I realized that it MAY be possible for me to burn a CD with what I need to
convert to floppies, and maybe a .SIT or something from which I can make
sure I got DiskCopy or whatever, and use my Performa 636 (LC 630) to make
necessary disks; otherwise I could buy a USB drive. Either way should
work.
My first rule of thumb is, I prefer to do a full OS reinstall on any
computer I acquire with a hard drive, so I'll need the right disks for
that. (I'm considering trying to swap out whatever drive it comes with
and use an Apple-branded 80 MB Quantum SCSI drive. We'll see.) I also
have to do one since I intend to allocate 30 MB for ProDOS. This is
supposed to be first and foremost an Apple //e, not a Mac. I'll need the
tool for that too, I think...

Easiest solution is for someone to send you floppies in the mail. I can send
you some floppies if you'd like, with whatever software you want on them.

(Check your spamtrap. Most of them catch my e-mail.)
Warning: I don't know what I'm entirely doing... I know my way around
MacOS 7 barely and I have used the emulator card, so this stuff isn't
exactly new to me, but I've never really dealt with this myself since
historically I'm a PC person, not a Mac person. ;)
The whole point of getting this is the idea of an Apple ][ with a hard
drive, since this setup is about as authentically "Apple ][" as a IIgs
(IMHO). ;)

And by further adjustment, I got the thing to boot in 640x480 - which
looks less distorty on my LCD.
Question:
If the monitor is in 640x480 mode, how is the Apple //e screen handled?
Is it left 640x480, or does the software change the resolution? (Because
my monitor is a 1280x1024 LCD.)
My current plan:
First priority is to a 3.5" USB floppy drive for transferring files, and a
copy of teh MacOS to repartition, reformat and reinstall it, and the
emulator card software. (Anything I lack by next month I'll try to buy.)
Then the Y-cable and a joystick...

I did several Google searches trying to find such a keypress, to no avail.
I also tried to see if the Startup control panel would let me force it,
also to no avail.
I'm not exactly familiar with the nitty-gritty of working with old Macs,
although I know the Apple ][ like the back of my hand.

I found some.. but mostly dealt with booting from a SCSI ID or such. The mostly likely I found is startup manager, accessed by holding option as soon as you get the "bong" or chime or whatever it does... release when the manager appears. I have never owned a mac either. But I've been a little exposed to them (is that like radiation?) by some other II ppls I know...

Tried that. There was a four-finger salute I also tried, think it was
Cmd-Opt-Shift-Delete or something.
(In a previous video I refer to Open Apple-Ctrl-Reset as the "Vulcan Nerve
Pinch". I found out, 20 years ago, quite by accident that it worked on
Macintoshes as well.)

There's no boot locks on the floppies that I sent you. I didn't realize you
needed to boot from them.
But I emailed you instructions on how to get boot blocks on the disk and
this will let your Mac startup from the floppy. There's no key press
needed; if there's a floppy in the drive, the Mac will attempt to boot it.

I managed to get the //e card disk to boot, and used that to wipe the hard
drive. It only allowed me to set up ProDOS with a 10 MB partition -
couldn't do the 30 MB partition I wanted. Also, I only had a very minimal
installation of MacOS 6.0.8 ;)
But then the sound stopped working.
Noticing that under 7.0 the screen was always B&W the first time I booted
after powering on, and in general the date kept resetting to sometime in
"58", I decided maybe replacing the CMOS battery was a good idea. Did
that - had a spare one that was procured for me for my other LC.
The sound came back... :O
Someone gave me some ridic dinheiro for Christmas - but in cash, so I had
to buy a prepaid debit card. ;p I used some of the money while I was out
to buy groceries, pay a bill that just arrived but wasn't due until next
month, and get said card - and used said card to buy a USB floppy drive
and 10 MS-DOS pre-formatted floppies from Floppydisk.com, and here's
hoping they serve the purpose.
Did some googling, found some raw disk images (1474560 byte) of OS 7.1
installer, so I'll deal with that first. That succeeding, I plan to
migrate some of my software from this computer to that one via sneakernet.

I am - the USB drive is for *writing* disks.
The drive in the LC is actually the drive from my other (dead) LC, as the
one that came in this LC was defunct. (Also I thought I had a still
functional CMOS battery somewhere, but every one I've tested appears to be
dead. I *know* I had a brand-new one somewhere. Fortunately the CMOS
battery doesn't really affect much and certainly nothing relevant to
running the emulator card - though I don't get any *Mac* sound, including
the system beep on the //e, without a properly functional battery.)

The USB drive is on my PCs and is used to make disks for the Mac...
I managed to get a few small programs and ProDOS-8 2.4.2 onto the Mac, but
there's a lot of flipped bits (despite me creating my own verify-and-retry
tool on the computer - a Debian machine, since the other computers I have
don't like the drive - to make DAMN sure things were written correctly) by
the time some of the stuff gets loaded off the floppy drive on the Mac.
One of these "flipped bits" issues is visible in the video I took - a red
"C" in place of the < in <NO DATE> while running Copy ][+ 7.4. Different
copies seem to have bits flipped in different places, but the same copy
has bits flipped in the same place each time it's read.
This also prevented me from making disks for MacOS 7.1 - bits keep getting
flipped in System Folder:System, making the disk unusable.

It boots; but it loses its settings (screen resets to monochrome, volume
to 5, date to 56; also the Mac sound doesn't work (including no startup
chime), but //e "speaker flips" do). It keeps them if plugged in.
Maybe it's something else - but that behavior sounds like a dead CMOS
battery to me. :o

Here's a video:
http://3.buric.co/diagnoseme.mp4
Note at 2:00 that settings are lost on power-down.
Booting into ProDOS-8 is just to keep the video on-topic for CSA2. ;)

convenience... thats like asking what the use of an ethernet port on a 286 was... there's always a case for networking :) Monash Uni, Clayton used to have a room full of public access 286's networked to their main network. Back then less use to the home user though.

I have an XT in my collection, but it's a pain in the Arsch to use without
a hard drive. :/
Like you, I put an Ethernet card in it - for a long time I used it to IRC

Actually if you have the ethernet card in there, its fairly easy to turn it into a floppy based network client. Just mount the remote drive over c: and everything will feel right at home. Did that for BBS nodes once upon a time, admittedly on a 286, but thats really nothing more than a faster XT :)
