It’s a potential replacement only in the sense that it is functionally a
real-time clock. The two chips interface completely differently, and are in
no way interchangeable.

That's a shame. They're not real common, but certainly come around often enough to be noticeable.

The Dallas Semiconductor assembly sold to the Apple II market as the
No-Slot Clock is still available new—or at least it was a couple of years
ago—from any Dallas distributor.
