Hi,

I recently bought an Apple IIgs ROM 01 and wanted to ask for some advice replacing the battery.

The battery on my IIgs appears to be different from others that I have seen online. I'm guessing that it's not the original (different brand and 3V vs 3.6V), however it looks to be quite old -- I don't see a date but it says "Made in West Germany" on it.

Here are the details:

VARTA
Lithium 3V
ER 1/2 AA
Ord. No. 6126
Made in West Germany

I don't have huge confidence in my soldering skills and I'd like to replace the battery in a manner that minimizes risk of damage to the motherboard.

I was looking online and found the ReActiveMicro ROM0/1 Battery Caddy that uses 2 AAA batteries:

https://www.reactivemicro.com/product/battery-iigs-rom0-1-ca ddy/

I was wondering if anyone had experience with this approach or would have alternative recommendations regarding battery replacement?

I'm also curious -- is it possible that the battery is original?

Thanks very much!

Simon

Varta is/was a very common battery in Apple equipment.

Then the kit approach of Reactive Micro is a good one for you. Clip out
the old one with your side cutters, poke on the leads from the battery
kit. Done.

I made my own caddies - and it's a very simple operation too. If you
have just slightly more self-confidence in your soldering abilities,
you'd be hard pressed to find a less complex thing to do in all of
electronics.

They generally are. Not until these many years later have people been
concerned with replacing them. Even Apple soldered them in... talk
about planned obsolescence!

I've had 3xAA alkaline's sitting in mine, just spring clipped it onto the original battery leads. My original was showing 3v when I took it out. Battery voltage is meant to be over 3.5 and less than 4.75.. I find it odd there's a 3v lithium in there, theoretically it would never have kept time or anything else. All the originals I've seen a purplish in colour.. not that means anything, whats yours look like?
