These things are all modified PC drives so they still have the traditional PC molex power socket on them. Is there anything to be wary of supplying power to these drives via the external case power?

I'd be guessing you'd need to cut the II's power lines to the drives, don't want push and shove going on about who's got more power...anything else?

Is there any real need for an external power supply for drives? Normally the Apple II only uses one drive at a time no matter how many you have.

Well thats true, but if they case has a p/s and the drives support it, why not use it? :)

Because the PC power connector may not be switched like the Apple power is.
Why borrow trouble?

Just use some super strong double-stick tape (foam?) to stick their outer cases all together. (Foam tape is easier to remove later.) Remove the feet from two of them if necessary.

Are you saying not to use the drives' internal power supplies and let the Apple power them or vice-versa?

IIRC, there was a you-tube video once about how to do it.

Ponder, switched like the Apple's?? Sometimes the hard way is the only way :) I might let it go though... probably better at the end of the day to do something with the Apple PS than start powering odd objects seperately.

I was suggesting that you ignore the PC power connector and just use the
Apple connector.

Ahh ok, I wasn't quite sure where you were going.. Hmm the grounds in the molex are the same as the apple header... without checking I'd guess the +5 and +12 are going to be the same. However the power is applied to a different board so you could well be right there.
