The new season finally got to the one new series that looked in advance to be the most interesting to me, “Karakuri Circus”, and happily enough the first episode turned out to be quite entertaining. This is an odd fantasy based upon a late 90s, early noughts manga by the author of Ushio and Tora. So it has a similar retro look to it and similar classic shounen action vibes.

The story is about a boy who is on the run from mysterious and dangerous forces. The boy has inherited a fortune from his late father and it appears that someone is trying to kill the boy. The boy runs into a very strong man who is trying to be a circus clown and together they attempt to escape from the pursuers. But things look bad until the boy finds the equally mysterious Shirogane who is the mistress of a man-sized fighting puppet.

The first episode was a lot of retro-fun, with good animation, lots of action, and the sort of dramatic acting that you expect from this sort of shounen story. I liked it and I'll stick around for more. My initial rating is B+.
