Anime seasons are no longer the organized, dependable seasons that they used to be (as far as my iffy memory goes). The Summer 2018 season, for example, had a number of late starts and early finishes as the anime studios and distribution companies attempt to take advantage of Internet distribution along with more traditional “broadcast” (airwaves, cable and satellite) distribution in Japan. So three anime series that I was following finished in Summer 2018 while two more series that started in Summer 2018 and are “one season” in length are finishing during the first few weeks of Fall 2018. In any event, here are my final comments on the three series that did finish this past season.

“Lupin III – Part 5”, aka, “Lupin in France”. This series started in Winter 2018 and finished in Summer 2018 with 24 episodes. This was effectively a collection of four related “Lupin Movies” stitched together with some stand alone episodes. The overall theme was the way that Lupin and Gang attempt to adjust to modern day technology. I found the entire series to be a lot of nostalgic fun. Despite the techie gadgets and gimmicks this was still Lupin doing what Lupin does. So I enjoyed all of it and my final rating is A-.

“Angolmois”. This series started and ended in Summer 2018. It was a rousing story of the invasion of Tsushima by the Mongols in 1274, and how the Japanese got almost totally wiped out despite their proto - “bushido code”. This being a non-historical historical drama, a few main characters get to survive due to their determination. It was a lot of fun and my final rating was again A-.

“Planet With”. For a while this sci-fi series gave hints of being something of an homage to “Childhood's End”, but it ended up being a fairly routine Final Boss Battle series. There was nothing terribly wrong with it but I couldn't really care about most of the characters. So my final rating was B-.

And I'm still watching two Summer 2018 series that started late and are still going: “Tuskumogami Kashimasu”, which has broadcast 10 of 12 episodes and “Muhyo to Rouji no Mahouritsu Soudan Jimusho”, which has broadcast 9 of 12 episodes.

“Tsukumogami” is a strange bird indeed. It's an NHK adaptation of a novel and is being broadcast in an after midnight time, it concerns the everyday lives of the Commercial Class (including prostitutes) in Edo Japan, and it has cute magical not-quite-pets. I'm enjoying the incongruity of the show and my current rating is B.

“Muhyo” is a pure shounen magical fighting show. It's quite paint-by-number but since it is short and there is so little else on that I am watching I am sticking with it to the end. My current rating is C+.

And I dropped a number of Summer 2018 shows:

“Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro” - 4 episodes watched, final rating C
“Island” - 3 episodes watched, final rating C
“Satsurikuno Tenshi” - 3 episodes watched, final rating C
“Kyoto Teremachi Sanjou no Holmes” - 1 episode watched, final rating C-
“Overlord III” - 8 episodes watched, final rating C-
“Sirius the Jaeger” - 2 episodes watched, final rating: C
