“Tonikaku Kawaii” is a new Shounen Sunday rom-com manga series from Kenjirou Hata, the author of “Hayate no Gotoku”. “Tonikaku” is sweet, cute, funny and subtly smart and stands out as a breath of fresh air in the current era of “Isekai” trash.

Nasa is a brilliant teen who appears to have everything going for him and his life is nicely under his own control when one day he is stopped in his tracks by a cute girl who walks by him. Nasa blindly runs after the girl because he wants to meet her but he ends up being hit by a truck. However, the girl saves Nasa from death although he is still badly injured. Never-the-less Nasa still wants to be with the girl, follows her, and tells her that he loves her. The girl is surprised but tells Nasa that if he means what he says he will have to marry her. Nasa immediately agrees and then faints. He wakes up in a hospital where the girl had taken him.

Nasa recovers from his injuries but there is no trace of the mystery girl anywhere. So Nasa quits school and takes on customer service jobs so that he has a chance of maybe meeting the girl again. But two years pass and he still can't find her. Then, on the day of Nasa's 18th birthday the mystery girl shows up at Nasa's door, says that her name is Tsukasa, and brings marriage forms so that they can get married as Nasa promised two years ago. Nasa is stunned but he agrees, they fill out their forms and they get married at a Ward Office. So now the story starts, and as the author writes, it's a retelling of the Tale of Kaguya Hime, but one in which she turns back from returning to the moon and gets happily married instead.

So the story of the young couple goes on from there with the two of them enjoying all the ordinary things that are novel and fun for young couples. Surprisingly, the author not only avoids the usual cliches of rom-com manga stories but he enthusiastically lampoons them ever so gently. There are also a huge number of pop culture and manga Easter Eggs in each chapter. But this story is not a farce – it is a story about two very nice people starting to learn about each other.

At the same time, the Kaguya Hime vibes are very strong. The English subtitle to the story is “Fly Me to the Moon”. And the audience regularly gets glimpses of how different Tsukasa really is compared to how she appears on the outside. In ways I'm reminded of “O Edo Rocket”.

The story has had 30 chapters so far and I've loved every one of them. The author keeps me smiling constantly. So give it a try and see what you think..
