I tried looking in everything from the Red Book to the IIGS Hardware
Reference, but I couldn't find anything that specifies the maximum
dimensions for a card that will fit inside an Apple II. I just knocked
together a GPIO board design with a couple of 6522s and some bus-interface
logic. It's only as wide as the edge connector that goes into the slot, and
it extends about 73 mm above the slot. Will this fit inside an Apple II
with the lid on, or do I need to shrink it vertically to fit?

(For comparison, I measured a 1 MB IIGS memory-expansion card (not the same
type of card, but it has some of the same size constraints); it came in at
68.6 mm above the slot. I extended the depth probe (?) on my calipers to 73
mm and rested it on a slot; eyeballing it, it looks like the top edge of the
card would be below the top edge of the case, but will that be enough
clearance?)

Apple IIGS Technical Note #28 gives maximum card dimensions:

http://www.1000bit.it/support/manuali/apple/technotes/iigs/t n.iigs.028.html

The limit for height above the slot is 2.75 inches (69.85 mm).

Do you have an Apple II to test? I have some IIe's if you'd like me to take some measurements.

I have a IIGS in the closet and a IIe in storage, but it seems such a basic
specification should've been specified somewhere.

A bit more digging this morning turned up this 16-year-old post with ASCII
drawings:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!original/comp.sys.apple2/c LkNLqEEDlA/lKuNoVmZW7gJ

Looks like the circuit area on my card is just within the limit, but the
edge connector should be made shorter (mine is 450 mils tall, but the
drawing indicates that 300 mils is sufficient).

The width given in the drawing for the edge connector seems suspect, though,
for a 50-pin slot with 100-mil spacing. 2.95" seems a bit wide. The
footprint I've been using in KiCad comes out to just a little bit over 2.5",
and the cards I've made with it so far have fit.
