Ah, a light in a sea of darkness. After what seems like years in the One Piece manga, in Chapter 912 Luffy and Zoro are back together and it appears that they will be fighting side-by-side (and as mentioned in the manga, this also for the first time in many years).

One piece continues to be a breath of fresh imagination in a manga world full of dullness, duplication and unoriginality. I stopped ordering manga magazines from Japan around 5 years ago because I became tired of the growth of trapped-in-a-game stories which have now morphed into endless “Isekai” (trapped in a fantasy world) stories. Amongst all of this boring and derivative junk somehow Oda has been able to keep One Piece fresh, funny and compelling.

In theory One Piece will finally end sometime in the next few (or more) years. I certainly hope that it ends within my lifetime (and Oda's). When you step back from it, One Piece is an amazing feat of pure storytelling in its development into a complex mythical adventure.

Most of all, One Piece puts a smile on my face when I read it. And what more can I ask from entertainment.

I had put off the anime quite some time ago as I was just too busy but
continued to read the manga and it has been thoroughly enjoyable. The array
of characters he continues to come up with after so many years is really
remarkable. How many new characters for Big Mom's territory alone? It's
staggering.

I've continued to collect the anime, though, and decided to take a break
from new series and finally get caught up. Problem is, it has been so long
since I watched a One Piece episode and I know the complete story line from
the manga, so where the hell did I leave off? :D Decided to pick up from
the end of Marine Ford and Fishman Island, but I remember you mentioning
long ago how that chapter dragged on. The animators (and Oda on occasion) do
have a tendency to hammer home the ills of human behaviour to the point of
tedious moralization. It was nice to get it out of the way.

Fortunately Punk Hazard is not too long and makes a good change of pace from
Fishman Island, although we move from moralizing on racism and steroid use
to drug addiction and human experimentation. I really like the dynamic
between Law and Luffy's crew. On to Dressrosa now which will take a while
to complete and I am very much looking forward to Zou and Big Mom.

When the sumo wrestlers take O-Kiku:

Luffy - "Hey, Zoro, why'd you let them take her!?"

Zoro - "Cutting down naked men is a bit..."

LOL
