Today I turned on my my PowerBook 1400cs for the first time in probably a decade and it worked! That’s the good news. The bad news is that I cannot get it to connect to my Airport wifi router via the Orinoco card I have plugged into it. The card “sees” my wifi, but I can’t get it to ask me for a password.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Rick

Try turning off wi-fi security on the router (just to see if the
machine can connect). The OS on the 1400 may require an older security
protocol

It is probably the router encryption. The simplest protocol is what the early powerbooks and WiFi card used; SEP? I’m unsure of the acronym. Today’s router won’t accept it. It’s too easily broken.

Beyond that, I don’t know.

Disable security on the wifi router. The card is likely to be incompatible with modern security protocols.

The old Orinoco cards used WEP security, which is no longer used (it takes about 10 minutes for modern tools to crack it and gain access to the router. In theory a Bad Guy™ could hack such an easily access wifi and use it for Nefarious Purposes™ but in reality in most home situation its not an issue. If you live in an apartment building with dozens of networks, I wouldn’t turn it on, if you live in a house where you cannot see but a handful, setting up a WEP password is probably ok.

I don’t know what model Airport you have, but my cheapo Netgear router offers a guest network option. I don’t know of the Airport allows you to set two networks: one lower WEP (or none at all) security for the 1400 and one with a more secure password for everything else.

Bruce John's reply is really helpful. As a PowerBook 1400 user, (though not
yet tried connecting to the net!) I thank you for your sound advice.

If you work with WEP, or no password security at all, on a guest network, you can take a few extra steps like not broadcasting your router SSID (so it won't appear when people generically look for nearby wifi) and adding MAC address filtering options (so that your router only allows your powerbook and other old computers on your guest network.)
