I've got a long time friend & colleague who managed 911 Computer Aided
Dispatch systems for about 20 years.

"Life Threatening" and "Where's the Fire" have a new meaning for his
pages during system outages / issues. }:-)

The Rhode Island Computer Museum has a pair if PDP-11/45 systems that were part of the Brooklyn fire dispatch system. The DV11 and DH11 serial controllers were connected to fire pull boxes.

Now we have a literal interpretation of "Blue Screen of Death". 1/2 :-)

Not in my friends case. 1) the machines were running AIX which doesn't
have a BSOD. 2) The dispatchers were well trained and drilled
(monthly) to run manual dispatching. The dispatchers absolutely HATED
manual dispatch but were quite capable of doing it.

So even if the Computer Aided Dispatch system went down, dispatching did
not stop.

But it does put what is mission / life critical in a different perspective.
