Whether I use GScii or BINSCII I get a similar error. It will create a Shrinkit Archive, I can see the three files, but I can only extract the Readme and the sample database. The actual program is what I can't get out.

I really want to try to get this so I can see what I actually did--and just how bad it was.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Robert,

I had the same problem. I checked my CD backups from 2003 and the file
is identical. I even went back as far as the waybackmachine would let
me (1999), identical.

https://web.archive.org/web/19991114133603/http://ground.ecn .uiowa.edu:
80/apple2/apple8/Pgms/fsm30.bsq

I even tried to see if I could find the original comp.binaries.apple2
post (Fri, 7 Jun 1996 20:17:38 GMT) on The Usenet Archive. Nothing.
Maybe you would have better luck.

Hopefully somebody has a copy saved somewhere.

Did you check this Usenet archive?

https://macgui.com/usenet/?group=105&id=2878
https://macgui.com/usenet/?group=105&id=2880

Mac GUI Vault has the largest collection of Apple II and Macintosh binaries
posts online. We are the Usenet archive for Apple II.

Fantastic, thank you. So much for "The Usenet Archive".

The first post is not corrupt. The second is the same so that means it
was uploaded like that. Anyways I sciibin'd the file and ran through
nulib2. I will upload the working version to Asimov.

Meanwhile you can get it from the below link. I have added it to my
ground.icaen.uiowa.edu mirror for future reference.

It is a useful website, but Macintosh Garden has way more Macintosh programs.

Your shrink-it archive is the only link that I could get anything out of. All the other links to the original binary code do not download nor work when saved as text [Unicode, unicode utf-8, windows (iso), or windows (western)] and renamed to bsq extension. CiderPress opens your archive but not any of the others.

James,

it is a bit of a moot point now that the original Shrinkit archive has been restored; however, the Shrinkit archive you opened was rescued by using the first link (from what I can tell) to MacGUI above. You need to save the contents of the Usenet message and run BinSCII on it to recreate the original Shrinkit archive. This was the defacto standard for sharing binary files back in the day before the web took over.

You can still get BinSCII at various locations, one of which is here:
https://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Services/PDA/AppleIICompression.s html

As BinSCII is pretty much consigned to the pages of history now, you **very** seldom need to use it, but I thought I'd let you know if you weren't aware.

If you were aware, then - *** nothing to see here *** ;-)

Cheers,
Mike

This is what the first few lines of the basic file looks like right now:

Has the text been corrupted by being unicoded? If I save it to a Windows *..txt file and transfer it into AppleWin and rename the file type to bsq, will Binscii or CiderPress then be able to use (unwrap & unshrink) it?

Just curious. I will have to try (or test that procedure) later.

This looks a bit like what a tokenized Applesoft program looks like when
listed as a text file.

Have you tried LOADing it and LISTing?

I just tried to load it. I got a "file type mismatch" error. It shows as file type $00.

Sorry for the confusion. I created the Shrinkit archive without the
correct filetypes. It has been a while :)

To make matters easier I extracted the files and put them on a disk
image. I ran the program and took a sreenshot. Files are:

FSM3.po
FSM3_screenshot.png

They will show up in Asimov in a day or two.

https://mirrors.apple2.org.za/ftp.apple.asimov.net/images/pr oductivity/cooking/

Till then you can get the disk image here.

All the other links to the original binary code do not download nor work when saved as text [Unicode, unicode utf-8, windows (iso), or windows (western)] and renamed to bsq extension. CiderPress opens your archive but not any of the others.

You need to save the contents of the Usenet message and run BinSCII on it to recreate the original Shrinkit archive. This was the defacto standard for sharing binary files back in the day before the web took over.

CiderPress can easily change the filetype to Applesoft.
