Hit a yard sale yesterday, and saw what I thought was a charger for an iPad, in a box with a whole bunch of random hardware (of the nuts and bolts and odd mechanical bits type) was told “$10 but you have to take that whole box”

So I brought the box home, found a couple of tools, a variety of useful bits and the charger, which turned out turned out to be for an original iPod, since it has a FW port. It has a 30-pin cable. Is it the same as the 30-pin one used in more recent devices?

The original iPod had FW at the power block and FW on the top of the unit. The iPod mini had FW at the power block and 30 pin at the base of the unit. It will charge the next generation slim small iPod and should charge others with the 30 pin connector. My iPad 3 says "This accessory may not be supported", and does not show charging.
Hope this helps...

The first two generations of iPod were Firewire only (both charge and sync).
The 3rd generation iPod added the ability to sync over USB, but still
needed FW to charge. This was the first version of the iPod to sport the
30-pin connector.
The 4th and 5th along with the iPod Mini could charge and sync from either
FW or USB. I'm not sure about the first couple of generations of the Nano.
Subsequent iPods removed FW support.

FYI, a FW charger is a great thing to have if you are ever trying to revive
an older iPod which has sat for a *really* long time and has a totally flat
battery.

What do you want to do with it? If you want to sell it I am interested.

The original iPad could charge with a Firewire cable and the cable you are talking about. This is a list: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/ipod/ipod-faq/ipods-charg e-and-sync-firewire-usb2.html

I’ll try plugging my original iPod touch into it to see if it even works (if I can find it!) (and if it’s even a first gen, might be a second, I forget.)

Thanks for the responses, all!

Richard, contact me offlist.
