The two front guys in the 3400 picture seem quite cuddly.
Nice!

Aww, no miniskirts!..

Amazing that a hand gadget can do all that now.

Wow. Takes me back. The 3600 was long gone by the time I got to MSU,
but the tape drives and card readers were still in use (on the 6500,
and later on the Cyber 170/750).

The guy in back in the 3100 picture has a pipe stuck in his jaw. How many
computer rooms permitted smoking?

Lots of computer rooms had prominent NO SMOKING signs in those days.

Lots of staff ignored them.

When I watch old TV shows (1960s or earlier), it is amazing how
many of the key characters and background people are smoking.
For instance, in the early seasons, Mannix was always smoking.
Lucy and Ricky smoked (they were sponsored by a cigarette company).
Edward R. Murrow smoked on the air as he gave his reports.
Johnny Carson used to smoke on the air.

Heck, in The Americans just ended, Elizabeth was a smoker.

I'm seeing smoking in more and more movies now.
I think the tobacco companies are fighting back.

A friend of mine had a placard in his airplane:

If you must smoke, please step outside.

At SPC, we had an old-time IBM CE (he was trained on the Stretch) who would ignore the No Smoking signs as well as verbal requests to not smoke in the room. His retort was "You don't own these machines - we do!"

One of his favorite things to use for an ashtray were the cabinets holding strings of 3330 and 3340 disk drives.

What's really amazing is that at the time (well into the 1970s too)
it wasn't noticable it was just normal.

One of Arthur C Clarke's books had a character whose job was
editing the smoke and cigarettes out of old films so as not to offend
modern sensibilities. It seemed unlikely when I read it, recently I read
that there are people doing just that today - score another one for Arthur!

In old works shown on TCM and the rerun channels (e.g. METV) lots
of people are shown smoking. I'm surprised they would bother editing
it out.

I don't think it's done much, I wish I could recall where I saw it
mentioned - probably in the context of an AI algorithm to help.

I notice while watching "The Quiet Man", that John Seemed unable to get
through a scene without lighting a cigarette. He died later of cancer.
In this country at the moment, its an easy way to spot foreigners.

I don't smoke at all, but I think my accent would give me away as not
from there.

John Wayne was subjected to radioactive particles from an above-ground
nuclear test in 1956 while acting in the movie "The Conqueror". Many of
the actors in that movie later died of cancer.

The blame was tried for 'standard cancer levels' aparently by the AEC.
But the number of deaths was found to be higher than standard for that
number of people and age group.

According to the documentary I watched on this, people went out there
with geiger counters and found the area to be radioactive. Some scenes
were filmed on a sound stage, so the red dust and dirt was brought
back for that to the studio.

The claim was for all of the cast and crew showing a much higher than
normal cancer rate, not just The Duke.

There's a good chance the pipe wasn't lit. Some pipe smokers also use their
pipes as "fidget objects." It may have also been an affectation for the photo.
