What a wonderfully funny surprise! I just watched the first episode of “Hisone to Maso-tan” and this Bones original military-fantasy comedy was bright, cute and lots of fun. Hisone Amakasu is a new recruit in the Japan Air Defence Force and is working in the admin pool when she is assigned to take some paperwork to a hanger that doesn't show up on the map of the air base. When she gets there she doesn't find anyone, but does find a large pool full of water, out of which rises a very large dragon who proceeds to swallow Hisone whole.
It turns out that the dragon is a shape-changing magical beast that can be piloted when it choses a pilot It just so happens that that the pilot gets temporarily swallowed and pilots the dragon from the inside. This is military secret that has been passed on in Japan for centuries. The dragons have always been camouflaged as some mundane item. Nowadays it is as a fighter plane.
Hisone isn't at all pleased with the situation; she doesn't like being swallowed and then puked back out. (The “alternative” of going out the other end strikes her as even being more unpleasant.) Hisone tries to get out of the job, but the Air Force is quite insistent that she give it a try because dragons rarely choose someone, and this dragon hasn't had a pilot in three years. But then one evening as Hisone is about to leave she hears the dragon making noises in the distance and so goes back to it one more time. She feels some sort of rapport with the dragon, but she is swallowed again and this time the dragon is able to fly and Hisone starts to find out what it takes to be a dragon pilot.
Bones does a great job with the animation, Mari Okada has a lot of fun with the dialog, and the characters are very enjoyable with great voice acting making them feel very real. My initial rating is A.

Thanks for the recommendation on HisoMiso. It's one of those silly shows
that just manages to push the right buttons. My manager came in the front
door during lunch and commented that I had a big smile on my face. I was
watching HisoMiso at the time. :D
