Lupin is back in a big and fun way in “Lupin III – Part 5”. This time Lupin and gang are in France, so the traditional Lupin opening theme is played on an accordion in something of a Parisian bistro manner. The ending theme is also a great bit of retro 60s style fun with lots of nice images of Fujiko to admire.
The new series starts out with a bang as Lupin makes a deal with Ami, a laconic young female super-hacker, who has set up a dark web amazon.crook sort of site for some big crooks. Ami isn't the type to get Lupin's lust going but instead gets his chivalrous side into gear as he agrees to free her from the web crooks in exchange for her helping Lupin hack the site. The plan goes well at first with some help from Jigen and Goemon, but the web crooks soon turn the tables on Lupin as they involve Lupin and gang in some deadly web-enabled games.
All of the regulars are here, including a somewhat laid-back Zenigata, and Fujiko who is following the antics on line with amusement but no involvement. The backgrounds in France are gorgeous and the action animation is a lot of fun. I've now seen the first two episodes and this looks to be the best popcorn and beer anime to show up in quite a while. My initial rating is B+ and it may well go higher once Fujiko becomes more actively involved.
