To mis-quote; “Everything new is old again” as far as “GeGeGe no Kitaro (2018)” is concerned. This is the sixth rendition of the classic kids horror anime series and marks the 50th anniversary of the first GeGeGe anime in 1968. (The manga ran from 1960 to 1969.) The last rendition of the anime was back in 2007, although the variation “Hakaba Kitaro” came out in 2008. The opening theme song is still the original “GeGeGe” song.
The 2018 version has been updated, so for example, humans have smart phones.. But Kitaro still lives his simple yokai life in the swamp and still gets summoned via “yokai mail”. (This generates a bit of satire in the first episode as the human co-protagonist, 13 year old Mana, is faced with the problem of remembering how to “write a letter” - something she was taught once at school but has never used.)
Most of the regular characters show up in the first two episodes. Many look very much the same as in earlier versions. Nekomusume, however, is a lot taller (and a lot bitchier) than in the 2007 version. Kitaro still uses his traditional methods of fighting bad yokai. He is also very laconic – maybe even more so than in the “Hakaba” version.
I never finished the 2007 version – I stopped at episode 58 out of 100. I'm not sure how long I'll continue with the 2018 version, but I'll stick around for a while just out of nostalgia's sake. My initial rating is B-.
