Hi everyone, I quite new with vintage mac here!
In fact I just pick up this Mac Plus from a seller labeling as part. I turn
on the machine and it chimes and show the question mark floppy and I put a
system 6 disk in and it will start booting. Everything sounds correctly
until it just stops.
It will basically hang there at the happy mac face.

I did open the machine up to check. Everything was nice and clean and no
leakage what so ever. I also did swapping the rams around. No love either.

Could this be a floppy issue? Possible corrupt the boot disk?
Thanks guys.

Hody

Thanks Clark. I suspect the floppy issue myself. But I do not have another
working floppy to try out. Though I have ordered the Floppy EMU and that
should really take care the both issues. If with any luck that works out, I
will try to create some working floppy with it.

PRAM is indeed out of battery. I think that might be one of the course. I
might just simplely clip some AA batteries and try.

Memory seems fine. I did do a dry run without the floppy, and no sad mac
comes up.

Thanks for the tips, I am gonna get to work and see whats going on!

Floppy EMU arrived, running as normal, but same issue occurred. This rules
out the software issue. I did try different System boot disk images.

Try clipping 3 AA batteries in serial, no love either.

So now I think it is the ram. I have ordered some 4Mb upgrade online.
Hopefully with installing them can help.

These vintage macs really don't give you much to work with!!

Would there be other causes?

Quick update! After inspecting the all the board thoroughly again. I found
that the resister for recognising 256k Ram has been clipped off! The
previous owner must have installed 4Mb Ram on the machine. And I sholder it
back, everything works fine!

How I wish he has told me that! Now I am on the Mac Plus!

Congratulations, and to top it off, you found the problem yourself.

It’s been thirty years since I dealt with clipping those resistors. I’m not surprised it didn’t occur to me.

My Mac Plus is my first Mac, upgraded from a “Fat Mac” (512K Mac). I ultimately did all three upgrades, the 800K floppy and controller, the logic board (and rear case), and finally the bigger keyboard. I still have it although it’s been a while since I booted it up.
