I have a 2003 G4 1.42DP (FW800)

With the exception of a couple of hard drive replacements and a power
supply back in 2011, it's been bomb proof.

The other day though, it started to shutdown on boot (it had been running
for weeks prior to this). I googled and found many references to this but
mostly with a display with a proximity sensor, which I do not have.

I pulled it out of it's cubby and will clean it out, but I'd also like to
replace the battery while it's open.

What's the best place to buy them these days? I used to get them at Radio
Shack but they are no longer around.

Worse case I have a couple of older machines that I suppose I can fire up
and put my drive in to get my data off, but ideally I'd like to get this
going again.

Any thoughts? It just spins on the grey screen for a couple of minutes and
then shuts down. I usually screen share into it so I'm not sure if it was
doing something else prior. It did sound like it booted fully the fist
time. Earlier this week I had it up and running for awhile but it wasn't
connected to the network so that's when I shut it down and this happened.

Thanks

Diane

It's puzzling.
If it was an hardware problem (e.g. a faulty memory chip), it should give a
warning, like some beeps or power light flashing.
It could be an issue with the power supply, but it doesn't seem likely.

It makes me think about overheating: something gets hotter and hotter, until
it just stops working.
It could be a fan not spinning anymore, or an issue with the CPU (the
thermal paste non connecting anymore, the spring keeping the CPU and
heatsink together is broken...).
A CPU not properly cooled will overheat in a matter of minutes. Hence the
shutdown.
I can't remember if G4s had thermal sensors. I'm now used to Intel iMacs
with lots of sensors.

Did you open the case and check if anything comes loose, or the fans are all
spinning?

HTH,
Valter

If you’re running OS X try holding down the command and V key while booting; that will display what’s going on while it’s trying to boot; you may be able to catch what is causing an error before it restarts.

It's easier if you know what exactly you are looking for. It's a 1/2 AA
size 3.6V ER14250 battery.

You can get them at lots of places, including e.g. from Amazon.
Apropos Amazon, looking at this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MY86M7L
you can see that there are dozens of other numbers this battery is known
by, e.g. LS3 by Saft. Anyway, I think if you search for "ER14250" you
will get what you need...
Like here at Walmart:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Saft-LS-14250-1-2-AA-3-6V-Lithium -non-Rechargeable-batteries-10-pack/41491651

> Any thoughts?

Have you also tried booting in safe mode? This is done by holding the
Shift key during boot.

Otherwise what Bruce Johnson said, Command + V (for Verbose) which will
give a text output of what the kernel and the OS does during startup.
This might give some good clues about what's wrong.

It could also be a faulty PSU like Valter Prahlad mentioned, or it could
be a faulty HDD so that some files got corrupted and thus the boot
eventually fails. There are many variables, but you have to start somewhere.

You could, if you have one, boot from an additional HDD with Mac OS X
installed. I have one as an external drive that I can connect using
FireWire (FW800). Holding the Option key after the chime will present
you with all bootable partitions, including those on external FireWire
drives. If this external Mac OS X boots, then the chances are high that
it's just your installation on the internal HDD. You can then check the
filesystem using Disk Utility from the external Mac OS X and try to
repair it.

Anytime.
I hope you can get it fixed.

The OP problem is definitely NOT an HDD failure.

Even if the HDD was toast, the Mac would not shutdown: it would say "I can't
find any boot disk" - or something like that.
And if the HDD was corrupted, the Mac would show the folder icon with a
flashing question mark (meaning "Cannot find a valid system to boot").

This is unlikely to work (since the issue seems hardware-related), but it's
worth a shot.

I've got a 2014 Mac mini that on 2 separate occasions corrupted its hard
drive so successfully that OSX (I think it was El Capitan) would start
booting and then after about 20-30 seconds just shutdown.

Not much fun but on the positive side...it wasn't the PSU.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I am stuck on a couple of things as I can't
get the BT mouse to work with it at the moment and won't have a USB mouse
until tonight.

I was able to boot it off my external Panther drive. If I could navigate
more items via keyboard I'd be better off. It's indexing at the moment.

I took a video of the boot process. It's a little fuzzy but these are the
things that stand out to me:

CLOCK RESET! PMU WAS PROBABLY RESET SOMEHOW!!

disk2s3, major 14, minor 23
disk2s3: I/O error
disk2s3: I/O error
syncing disks... Killing all processes
continuing
done
CPU halted
AFT_ATA_Sii3112:FT_handleBusReset - ATA bus reset was called, overriding it

Then I get screens of :

USBF: 77.563 OHCI driver: OHCIRootHubPortPower bit not sticking (0).
Retrying (the .563 number differs on each line)

One line says this (then more of the above and it shuts down)

USBF: 87.612 AppleUSBHubPort: Port 1 of Hub at 0x3b100000 about to
terminate a busy device (Macally iKey)

When I boot off the external FW drive, the USB keyboard is working fine.
I do have a 4-port USB card in the machine if that seems to be the problem
BUT it is working on the Panther drive.

Thanks again for any other tips!

Diane

I think this could mean the battery is dead.
You could check this again with the new battery installed.

These should mean problems with the HDD.
Looks like I might have been wrong, and a faulty HDD may cause a
shutdown.... :-o

> CPU halted
This looks serious but I don't know the meaning.

There might be some conflict between the system on your internal HDD and the
USB card.

If you can, try removing the USB card and check if boot goes ok: then you
know where the problem lies.
If that's the case, you might try to reinstall OSX; maybe some driver or
whatnot got lost or corrupted, hence the conflict.

This means the internal clock is set to the wrong date/time; and is just informational

This might mean an issue with the internal ATA controller, or it might be a bad disk.

Hmmm, this might be the root of your problems; I’ve had similarly strange behavior from flaky USB devices. Is the keyboard pligged into the 4-port card or a mb one? try switching it to the other, and see if the error follows it?

What does Disk Utility on the Panther drive say about the internal drive?

It actually took awhile to reboot it, as my Panther drive fell off the
machine too. I had to run out and buy a mouse to make things easier to work
with.

I had forgotten that in 2013 I added an SATA card to the machine along with
2 new drives. I unplugged and reseated everything this morning. I have it
running ow off the original 120gb drive running 10.4.11

I can see both 500gb drives in there. I cannot open the Documents folder on
the main drive. :( And I think the Desktop folder does the same, though
there are others I can open and work with.

I tried to Verify it using Disk Utility and it failed saying "The
underlying task reported failure on exit". The backup drive passed.

So it does sound like a hard drive issue though I had no warning. I'm going
to try the repair and see what happens.

I think I have Disk Warrior or Data Rescue and I'll have to see if I can
get it on that machine somehow.

Are there good external caddies I can use to plug these drives in if the
machine itself ever dies?

Thanks!
Diane

HDD failures don't have to be total. Sometimes only some sectors are
corrupted and that's what makes it act up, including the possibility to
have it shut down on its own afer a certain timeout.

It must be over 20 years ago that I had a PC with Linux on it. It would
boot and error messages wouldn't stop. I rebooted and everytime the
errors and messages were different with me ending up on a usable command
prompt from time to time. It took me some hours of troubleshooting to
find that not the Linux as the operating system was acting up -- it was
the HDD, and I prooved that because one time that a bootup made it to
the command prompt I used dd to write something to the disk and I then
read it again and got astonishing results: some writes didn't work, for
others (that obviously had worked) the reads didn't work a couple of
times but worked one time or the other... It was strange but since that
time I know that HDD errors can be of such kind: different sectors were
working and not working randomly. BTW a Windows on the same HDD didn't
come this far... (BSOD, Blue Screen of Death...)

I don't know how Mac OS (the Classic one) and Mac OS X acts if it has
trouble reading data during bootup, because HDDs became more reliable
over the years and since I've started using Macs (around 2006 or so) I
didn't encounter such a situation ever again.

Cheers,

I’ve dealt with failing disks a number of times on both Classic and OS X over the years and this will not cause the system to shut down like this.

If the OP wants to confirm this, disconnect the HDD, power and data and boot. It SHOULD come up with the “I want a disk” screen. If it shuts down, it certainly isn’t the HDD.

A lot of simple debugging can be done by disconnecting things. Minimum for a test is video, power and one bank of memory, no USB, no serial, no ADB, no network, no expansion cards (except for video if needed), etc.

The boot drive definitely has issues. I was able to get the few files I
actively use off, and at this point I am running off the original (!) 120gb
internal drive and a thumb drive for my data.

I was still having boot issues though when I had both 500gb drives plugged
in. I had bought an SATA interface and ended up unplugging both drives from
it and power. I need to dig up my warranty info from that - my original
500gb drives had a 5 year warranty and these were installed summer 2013 but
I don't remember their warranty.

That said, apparently when I set these up, I allowed Chronosync to do it's
thing on the internal backup without first making it a boot drive i.e. I
cannot book from my backup drive. Can I install Tiger over the top of what
I have on there? I have never been able to make Chronosync make a bootable
backup.

Thanks
Diane

Hi Diane,

Changing the battery won't help. I have the same machine like yours, only
it's a FW 400 model, the last one that can boot into OS9. I've been running
my MDD DP for over a year now with an empty battery without problems, the
only "problem" is that after booting up I get the message that my clock is
set to a past date but as I'm connected to the net my clock shows the right
time and date.

Just saying. Good luck with your sick MDD.

Best regards, Jörg.

Have you tried booting from the install DVD and running disk first aid?

It will assess the disk and you may repair if needed, and repair permissions.

Charles - I thought Chronosync was supposed to as well

Jörg - nah, but I figured it didn't hurt since I had it open

Glen - I couldn't get the drive open even using the mouse to trigger it!
Now that it's running I'll have to try that again. I did try it from one of
the other boot drives with no luck.
