Any software that you would recommend? I found this program called Graphic Disk Labeller (http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/graphic-disk-labeller) but it looks like it was made to print to it's own labels that were included with the program.

Contact Avery. IIRC, they had a "Label Printing Program" for the Apple II.

Back in the day, I used AppleWorks to print labels. Text was sufficient for
my needs at the time, but if I wanted to get fancy, I might've been able to
use TimeOut SuperFonts to use different fonts. (It also allowed inclusion
of Hi-Res and Double Hi-Res images, but I suspect it would've only allowed
printing the entire image at a fixed size.)

You could try Addressed For Success. I think SoftDisk GS also had a label
printing program in their catalog.

Of course, if you go to Avery and download a template, they're just
Microsoft Word files. You could probably use Apple Works GS page layout
module or GraphicWriter III to make your own templates.

How do you write txt in Appleworks and include HiRes or Double Hi-Res graphics? I have AppleWorks GS installed and running but I could not figure out how to add graphics to a document or spreadsheet.

I am still struggling to get GraphicWriter III to run. Maybe tomorrow morning I will get some more time to try it.

AppleWorks, not AppleWorks GS...and you also need TimeOut SuperFonts, as
AppleWorks by itself is text-only.

I've never used AppleWorks GS, but I'd expect it would have something pointy
and clicky to include images of some sort.

It would not be hard to write a simple Applesoft/Int.BASIC program to do it. I think I wrote one back in the late 1970s.

That requires the Imagewriter or ImagewriterLQ driver. The ImagewriteLQ driver can do Imagewriter emulation.

PublishIt4 is a desktop publishing software that allows graphics with text wrapped around it.

Rob,

I am using an ImageWriter II. I was able to get it to working without anything special. Here are the directions I followed:

“To connect a printer to your IIgs, you simply plug it in, use the System Disk Installer to install the driver, and then select it from the Direct Connect Printer CDEV in the Control Panel. All of your applications will now be able to use your printer correctly, because they only talk to the standard interface, the Print Manager.”

That being said, I have not yet printed graphics from any of these programs. Perhaps I am working on this for nothing? Are you guys telling me that the IWII will not print graphics from GS/OS?

:(

The ImageWriter II will print graphics just fine from any standard GUI
program that allows printing.

Then I used AppleWriter to add addresses using a typewriter set up as a printer.
Must be an easier way by now. I just hope your label printer uses a standard command set like Epsom or IBM.
Let us know how you end up doing it.

I am getting pretty close to having a working label template in GraphicWriter III. I have a label object created by inserting and resizing a graphic from the clip art included with the app, and then inserting a text object beside it, aligning them to each other, converting them to a group object, triplicating that object and adjusting the three objects to be aligned horizontally with the three label columns. I did this by printing it to regular paper and overlaying the label sheet to it to see where it would line up with the labels. Adjust, rinse and repeat.

Here are some phone pics of the label config and the printed output:

As you can see, my IWII wants to insert a header or buffer before it starts printing. I think that may be set in the printer dip switch settings. It currently prevents me from printing on the first two rows. If I can overcome that, I think I have it ready to produce the labels that I need. I will RTFM when I get a chance and see if I can figure that out.

It sounds really amazing to write my own program in basic or assembly to do this, however I am a firm believer in not reinventing the wheel, so if this program will do it, then I’m happy to use it. Maybe once I get some more Apple II specific coding experience, I might try it for fun. I have written very little code in my life, unless you count modern structured text based languages. Some 8-bit basic in my pre-high school days, but nothing worth writing home about.

Since this IIgs label creating job pays very poorly (pronounced “not all all”) I had to stop for now and go to work. On the plus side, today is “Ski with the boss day” so today my job consists of giving a tour/demonstration of some optimized computer systems in th morning and then going skiing the rest of the day. I guess I can’t complain.

Another Idea:

Set up a spreadsheet in AppleWorks where the first label (top left) fits/prints to the size of your desired label (1-6 fields for a 1" tall label), then all the rest of the labels on the spreadsheet just reference the fields on the first label via a simple formula in each of their fields. I don't think you could print the graphic part this way, though. You would have to print the graphic from another program before or after printing the text, unless the graphics are mouse-text.
