On an (emulated) IBM PC 5150 I am playing with Concurrent CP/M. To run
more than one program with other(s) has/have to run in a different
console from what I read.

I already downloaded two manuals in PDF to find out how to run
multitasking. But none did tell me how to open a new console on a single
PC. I only could find out that CTRL-1, 2, 3 and so on switches between
consoles. But these shortcuts have no effect here that I assume I have to
open other consoles first?

Presumably you have to connect some more consoles, by configuring and
connecting serial ports to emulated serial terminals?

I thought this too. But then realised it makes not much sense. Because
with Concurrent CP/M you are supposed for example to dispatch a print job
while doing other things. Thus assuming you would only use one physical
console. If you needed additional terminals back in the day that would
circumcise the idea of multitasking.

For example there is OS-9
< https://news-commentaries.blogspot.com/2018/02/os-9-forgotte n-operating-system.html>. There,
just like with UNIX or Linux, you can dispatch a task by adding a "&" at
the end of a command. I would have assumes Concurrent CP/M knows a
similar procedure.

If you like CP/M, have you tried OS/8? You'd be right at home.

You mean OS-9? Yes, have it emulated in a TRS-80 Color Computer
(Coco). Also did a Youtube video to show it running two programs
concurrently.

Still I'd like to see Concurrent CP/M actually running something
concurrently.

No, I mean OS/8 on the PDP-8 (try the emulator).

A lot of stuff in CP/M is clearly modelled on it; it was years earlier.

The use of PIP for the copy command is the smoking gun.

Actually, it's DOS-11, not OS/8. Gary Kildall used DOS-11 as the model for
CP/M, because he had used it previously.

I was going to mention that later...!

Can't run TSS/8 on my SBC-6120, unfortinately.

I used DOS/BATCH, which I think is also much the same. I wonder if OS/8
just pre-dates DOS-11 - I think it does.

But it runs great on SIMH :-).

Oh yes. It should also (rather oddly) run on my PiDP-8, of course,
although I guess, for purists, it shouldn't.

The 6120 chip has some different instructions in the required opcode
slots.

First edition of the OS/8 Handbook is from April, 1974. Earliest documentation
I can find at Bitsavers for installing DOS-11 is from August, 1971. My 1970
and 1973 editions of the Small Computer Handbook make no mention of OS/8, while
the 1976 edition of the PDP-8/a Minicomputer Handbook does.

Thanks! I had it in my head that OS/8 was quite a earlier. I know I was
using DOS/BATCH in late 1973 or thereabouts.

Kildall had also worked with CP/67-CMS at Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey.

And I see all kinds of CMSisms in CP/M: FILELIST, FILEDEF, etc. etc. usw. ktl.
