Nice to see that Dave B. still takes the time to post reviews, even if
the season starts with a wimper. :D I'll be following CCS Clear Card
and see what comes up here on Usenet.

Been trying to watch some anime on Netflix to support the industry more.
Catalogue is pretty decent so far, but it's primarily main stream. You
won't find Natsume Yujin-cho or Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, so some
things still stear me towards fansubs. I was drawn by the hype for Titan
and it certainly is good. Finished 7 Deadly Sins too, and I probably
would not have come across The Boy and the Beast if it was not on
Netflix, so check that out if you get the chance. Really liked Little
Witch Academia as well.

Some great live TV series too if you are looking for something
different, like Dirk Gentley's Holistic Detective Agency, or Sherlock.
That all competes for eye time so I am watching less anime than in
previous years. I also have loads of VHS tapes collecting dust, so I am
trying to give them one last view before disposing of them. Watched
Fushigi Yugi months ago, and finally finished Nurse Angel Ririka SOS
last year. A whole large box of tapes for just 2 shows! Good quality
fansubs so I will likely try and pass them on if possible.

Next up is the commercial release of Brain Powered. Some of these old
shows are a bit of a chore to watch. :D Lovely music by Yoko Kanno but
the dialogue and pacing is so disjoint at times. I remember this show
had mixed reviews even back then but it was 1998 and the pickings were
more slim. Well, at least the wife will be happy after I free up the
storage space. ;)

So, happy new year all! I'll try and pop in more often this year.

I'm still a fan of "Brain Powerd", but then I like Tomino's odder efforts. (Have you ever seen "Overman King Gainer?)

Cheers for the new year -

Gainer was WEIRD. The novel it was based on even weirder. Have you read "The Ice Companies"?

No I haven't. I wasn't even aware of the novels. Now that I've Wikied the topic I'm rather surprised - I didn't think that Tomino "borrowed" the idea/setting. But a 97 novel series? I'm too old to start something like that, although if I can find an e-copy (in English or French) I might try one of them on my Kobo just to see what it is like.

Thanks -

I like the general premis and I think the idea of "organic" mecha was
original at the time. Have to keep these shows in the context of the times.
Then again, I am one of the few who seemed to enjoy Gasaraki. ;)

Have not seen Overman King Gainer but I did find a source for subs. Should
probably gran a copy while it's still up. 26 episodes though, so I'll have
to be in the mood for old time mecha.

"Old time mecha"... nah, not really. Get ready for a disco dancing mecha, and a cast who slip on ice and fall on their faces regularly. As I said, it is an "odd" series.

Cheers -

Ririka is a very underated series and the original fansubs (by Tomodachi I
think?) were very good (though the more recent digisubs were also done
well).

Although it seemed to be aimed at a younger audience than Sailor Moon it
was in many ways comparable I thought, in fact I preferred Ririka's
sardonic nature to Usagi's klutziness. There was also some powerfull plot
twists, like killing off Ririka's mentor Kanou half way through: all of a
sudden she didn't want play anymore but by then she was in it over her
head!

Yes, it was Tomodachi, and they subbed my Fushigi Yugi tapes as well. They
included some useful notes between episodes that were much appreciated.
Ririka was a worthy forerunner of mahou shojo series that followed.

I originally saw Nurse Angel Ririka thanks to a girl called Jo-chan who
serialised shoujo series that she'd converted from VHS to Realvideo
format and distributed via her FTP site. Who now even knows what FTP is?
Those were the days, when it took two hours on a dialup connection on a
sunday afternoon to download a single anime episode in squishy realvideo
that looked like it was done in watercolours!

Ah the good old days. When I got into Linux I switched from dialup 56K
to DSL. Now I wait days for my torrents to come close to
1:1. Meantime I have the episode or chapter to enjoy or to learn about
the latest GNU/Linux distro.
