So I pulled my 540c out of the closet after a couple years of hibernation,
and when I plugged it in, the power brick made a rather loud pop and,
unsurprisingly, the laptop does not appear to be getting any juice. Does
anyone know of a way to get a generic replacement that's compatible, or any
other solutions short of buying an outrageously priced original part
online? Or are there any known common common component failures inside the
adapter I might be able to convince a friend to fix?

Besides just being a decent system, having this guy around to use in SCSI
Target Mode w/ various System install images onboard for troubleshooting
vintage Macs was exceptionally handy. It was the jewel out of roughly 100
systems I picked up a decade ago. :(

Thanks in advance,
Justin Pope

It’s unlikely there is a replacement adapter around for the 540 series. They were unique in having TWO +16 V supplies, one for running the laptop and one for charging the battery. It also used an unusual four pin connector.

Loud pop, hmmm… Most likely a capacitor and it ought to be easy to spot. If it were me I’d say it’s worth a try.

If you can’t get it fixed your best bet is to remove the cable from the power supply, find a suitable power supply and wire them together. I’m going to guess that your battery is shot so you really only need to supply power for the computer.

Take a look around on the Internet, there is information available out there about the voltage and current ratings and the pinouts.

I've had several of this series of PowerBook. One adapter failed and I replaced it. Later I found one which the main circuit died but the battery side still worked (tested with voltmeter). Cut cord in middle, switched the wires, and it worked to run the 'book. Battery dead anyway so didn't matter. Still keep it as a spare. Still have a 540c and a 500 (PowerPC upgraded) that both work, the latter runs the unsupported 8.5 OS hack.
