I have an old iBook G4 that runs OS 4 ?10.4quite well, but this versjon is
now rather limited. I figure it can run 10.5, since I had a PowerBook G4
that ran it.
However, 10.5 only comes on discs, to be found on eBay or Amazon at
exorbitant prices.
I wonder if I could attempt a brain transfer from my PowerBook, by starting
it in Target Mode and then firing up the iBook and press, say "C", to make
it attempt to boot from the PowerBook's drive & system?
Or is this all a waste of time and energy?

Yes, that procedure will work.

Instead of pressing “C”, hold down the option key on the iBook. This brings up a graphic display of available drives to boot from. Select the PowerBook and click the right arrow key.

It did work, although I had to boot in 10.4, select the FireWire-disk (once
it had mounted…) as StartUp Disk. I couldn’t believe my own eyes when a
Desktop i hadn’t seen for, maybe 5 years, came to life on the iBook screen!
So: Now I have PB G4 running as a "slave" disk on the iBook… Now, should I
try with the OS 5 disks and installl to the iBook’s HD?
But, otherwise, it was fun hooking them up like that &v se it work! :D

Provided the iBook meets the OS 10.5 speed requirement, yes, you can use the installer disk to install 10.5. Or you can use an older version of Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your PowerBook’s disk to the iBook.

So, I should (could) try to repeat the procedure, and try to install 5.0 on
the rather recalcitrant iBook thru the use of the (half-dead) PowerBook?
Reminds me of how I got High Sierra onto the disk that would not boot,
because (I found out later) a defunct HD cable? With the use of a "disk
driver" (power & USB) that allowed the disk to hook up to my Mini, so I
could format it & put in a new System & restore from backup?
:)
Should I then stick the 5.0-disk in the PB or the iB? I mean, it runs 5.x
from the PB thru FireWire. Weird seeing that olllld start-up-screen… :)
But, as mentioned before, it flat out refuses to boot from the DVD/CD. Hm.
I haven’t tried that "startup disk"-thingy in System Prefs on that, yet…
Stay tuned!

You can put the installer disk in either machine. If the iBook can read it, use that. If it can’t read it then use the PowerBook as a Firewire DVD drive (using Target Disk Mode).

The iBook may not be able to install 10.5 if it’s processor speed is too low (below 800MHz IIRC), it’s an arbitrary decision on Apple’s part. In this case you can put 10.5 on the iBook by copying the PowerBook’s disk over to the iBook.

I did it to a PowerBook G4 using "special tactics" so watch this section
from one of my tech video logs to see that. I'll preface this by saying it
took a USB drive, an old Intel MacBook, and the PowerBook:
