<"It gives me the strength of 20 atom bombs for a period of 20 sec.">

Personally, I'm gratified as all-get-out to see Shooter aiming to
do a SECRET WARS again. For one thing, purging his system of such
putrescence on a regular basis will do wonders for his health. But
seriously.... SECRET WARS II proves that Marvel realizes that
SECRET WARS I was not an "event": it was just some Marvel mag, just
like the other Marvel mags. So why not crank out another SW if the
punters'll eat it? Do one every year! Hell, make it an open-ended
series! Then it'll eventually get lost in the shuffle of team-up
books where the script and art quality will eventually drag it
down to its true sales level, it'll flutter, go bimonthly, and
finally go the way of MARVEL TEAM-UP.
(This is a sort of subverting the system from within.)

Then in two years, Marvel will bring out a RETURN OF THE SECRET
WARS maxi-series and the whole damn thing can do its Roman candle
bit all over again. Sound like fun? You bet.

Mind you, if *Barry Smith* was drawing SW2.....

> Remember, though, if you bought SW, you have no one but yourself to blame.
> Don't repeat your mistake! I didn't even buy the first series, even though
> I do read X-Men and Iron Man, and was at the time it came out reading FF,
> Spider-titles, and Captain America. No, I didn't feel like I was missing
> anything, and I have no intention of buying back issues. What I don't
> understand is why anyone would feel obligated to support this dreck. The
> continuity with other titles is just a cynical sales ploy. According to
> Marvel, the tie-ins to this idiocy will be far more intimate. They know how
> to sell to fans.

I agree. On the other hand, it's *not* the continuity freaks that made this
book a success. Even if *all* of the X-MEN fans bought SECRET WARS, that would
be only 3xx,000 copies per month. From reports that I've heard, SECRET WARS
is hitting 7-800,000 copies per month! What is making this garbage a success
is the damn "Speculators" who figure that this will be a hot book, and thus
are buying 10 or more copies of each issue. I see a lot of ads in THE COMICS
BUYER'S GUIDE from places that'll sell you SECRET WARS #1-3 for $1.00 each in
lots of 100 or somesuch idiocy like that.
One of the unplanned effects of SECRET WARS II will be to make the
first series that much less "special", and the market for it will die. Of
course, this won't be Marvel's problem, because they will have already sold
the series, but it may well teach the Speculators a lesson (but then, I doubt
that --- they didn't learn after ETERNALS #1, HOWARD THE DUCK #1, DAZZLER #1,
etc. Those books you can't even *give* away; everyone who wants one has got
one).

I don't plan on touching SWII with a ten-foot pole, except for the first
issue, which will tie in with THE X-MEN and NEW MUTANTS. But then, I may
find myself buying the whole series again (I think I'm a masochist at heart).
After all, it's only 9 issues, it's not like it's a regular book or anything,
ya know, and after that we're free.... :-)

> Frankly, I'm holding out for SON OF SECRET WARS (or the ever-popular MARVEL

> Neek! Neek!")...

Far be it for me to correct Moriarty, but as a person who named his four
machines "moe," "curly," "larry," and "shemp" I do feel a certain obligation
to mention that the correct term is "nyuk, nyuk, nyuk" We now return you to
our reguarly scheduled reviews...

For reasons that escape me, this reminded me of my favorite cartoon that I
have seen at an Ice Cream store. It was a HERMAN cartoon. The characters
is eating a dark colored ice cream cohen (er cone) with a disgusted look on
his face at a 32 flavors ice cream palour. The soda jerk (appropriatly named)
states: "Vanilla? I thought you said 'Gorilla.'
