Ok folks, I really was glad to see the mail I got from people
thanking me for posting some software for Macs last weekend.
But I get really annoyed at mail from these self-appointed
net administrators, like these:

  >From: ihnp4!utah-cs!swt@utah-gr.UTAH-CS.ARPA (Spencer W. Thomas)
  >To: ihnp4!drutx!trb
  >Subject: Re: Animated Christmas Card (late, but worth posting!)

Look Spencer, not every site gets all the news, and we didn't even
get net.micro.mac until two weeks ago! And on top of that, many thanked
me for these postings - they obviously didn't have them. I received some
stupid mail like yours a week ago. Pretty short time for getting
more...

And now, to another self-appointed net.administrator:

Please post your mail to /dev/null where it will be appreciated! Thanks!

So there!

I would apologize for not thanking you for posting the sources, but I regret
to say I don't really feel like it anymore. My request was sent primarily
because there are *many* sites on the net which like to archive sources so
people can find them without requesting a resubmission from anybody.

By not posting to a sources newsgroup, you undermine a mechanism specifically
designed to assist the very same people you attempt to reach via a single
posting to a non-sources newsgroup.

Is it that hard to add "net.sources" to the Newsgroups: list?

Ah, another net person proudly flaunting their immaturity and rudeness. It
is (I assure you) possible to disagree with something a person sends you
without ridiculing them in public.

I feel that an important feature of Usenet's continued success will have
to be the development of common courtesy. Otherwise we will descend to the
level of a BBS for grade school students.

Yes, Tom Buckley, you can probably write me off as yet another self
appointed net busybody.

Rather than attempt to restate what I just stated in net.news, please take
an indirect pointer to my comments about Stargate over there. The above is
a great example of the mindless flaming I was talking about.

It is also a great reason for us to quit bickering and get the damned mac
sources topic created. I don't give a damn whether it is mod.sources.mac or
net.sources.mac, although if we can ever agree on moderation I'll moderate
the damn thing. I'm trying to find time to set up an archive for usenet so
that continuing repostings won't be neccessary, but if people are going to
randomly bitch at attempts at constructive comments, I'm not sure I'll
bother. I've also talked to someone at Apple about coordinating getting the
software they post to Compuserve also onto usenet, and acting as an archive
for that stuff, too. Why, at this moment in time, I don't really know.

Usenet, in case you hadn't noticed, survives only on the continued
cooperation of the component parts. Yelling at each other isn't
cooperation. It also doesn't accomplish anything. Can we try to lower the
tones of our voices long enough to talk about the things that need to be
talked about and get something done once in a while?

the fascist pig.

Tom,

We really do appreciate your source postings, honest. I think it
is really swell when my cat has kittens. I don't much care for it when
my cat has kittens on my kitchen table as opposed to the nice place in the
basement where everything is all ready for kitten production.

We archive net.sources.mac, and we don't archive net.micro.mac. We
would like to, but disk resources are low. I assume that you posted the
material so that people might profit from it; in the same spirit, please
post sources to net.sources.mac where people expect them.

Cheers,
eric

Not disagree with your intent, but this round of flaming was a long time
ago and two changes have occured.

	1)	net.sources.mac came into existence AFTER the postings.
	(Maybe even because of them).

	2)	Tom already apologized.

I do, however want to say that only 6 or 7 months ago the flaming was ALL
in the other direction when people were posting uuencoded binaries to
net.sources, and everyone told them to send them to individual groups.

Specifically, binaries for the IBM P.C. were directed to net.micro.pc and
tohexes for the mac to net.micro.mac. Now the net.micro people want it
to go the other way.

Sorry! News propogates in mysterious ways. I responded before looking
at the date. Mea culpa, mea culpa. (Did I really flame him? Oops.)

Thanks for the sources, Tom!
