I recently saw an add in the paper for the Intellivision II
for $49.97. I've been thinking about getting one for a while,
but now am a bit wary. I have heard that Mattel no longer
makes them. Have they sold the rights away? Is someone
else manufacturing them? Are there game cartridges available?

I guess the question is...Is this a fire sale ala Vectrex???
Please e-mail any information to me, and I'll summarize
if response merits.

                         TIA.

Mattel did indeed stop manufacturing Intellivision. I heard
(from Electronic Games magazine) that they sold the rights to
a (I presume) new company called Intellivision Inc., or some
such. The deal you saw could still be a closeout from Mattel,
though, as it hasn't been that long since Mattel quit. If you
are still considering getting one, my recommendation to you is
don't bother, as if you want just a video game, the Atari and
Commodo computers are quite cheap (especially at such places
as Toys 'R' Us) and have a growing (and in most cases far
higher quality) selection of game software. If your mind is
set, however, you could buy my old Intellivision I, in great
condition, with voice synthesizer and 19 or so cartridges
(hint, hint). Make me an offer.
