I have submitted a formal proposal for a new Usenet newsgroup focussed
on the Raspberry Pi (for info on which see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi).
The decision as to whether the group gets created or not depends
largely on interest. If you would like to see the group set up (or
even if you don't want it to be set up!) you might want to add a
comment to the proposal.

For the proposal see

https://groups.google.com/group/news.groups.proposals/browse _frm/thread/65db53c18168e557

or see newsgroup

news.groups.proposals

under the topic

RFD: comp.sys.raspberry-pi

If you would use the new group please add a comment to say whether you
would expect only to read the group or also to post to it. Only a word
or two are needed. As a guide, some comments are there already.

Apart from whether the group should be created or not various aspects
of the proposal can be discussed. Feel free to join in the discussion
if you wish to do so.

Bear in mind that news.groups.proposals is moderated so your posts may
take a few hours to appear.

There are links in the proposal to the Big 8 Management Board
processes and further background info.

This message has been crossposted.

The new newsgroup has been created, named as above.

I am not sure yet how many Usenet providers are already carrying the
group but it has been receiving posts for a couple of days and is
working normally.

Google does not have it available yet - reputedly they always take a
while - but I am told that many providers add Big-8 groups like this
one automatically when they receive a control message. So hopefully
most people can see it. Feedback on which providers carry the group
and which do not would be welcome.

Well I can certainly see it, I guess I'm getting it from
News.Individual.NET but as I run leafnode using several sources it's
difficult to be sure.

I'm accessing it via Google.

BTW, I looked on Asimov for an image for my RasPi that has some

Thanks for this and similar feedback. Over the past few days various
Usenet providers have added the group. Some did so automatically and
some needed to be asked by their customers. For anyone who still does
not have access the key seems to be asking your provider. Many
providers have added it very quickly.

For anyone whose provider is slow to add it there are at least three
free services that you can use to access the group: eternal-
september.org, Google Groups, and aioe.org.

Virgin and Demon's server is operated by Highwinds, I don't know about the
other two. You can ask them to add it.

No, plenty of new newsgroups have been created in the past decade. At
some point, I'm not sure of the exact date, they changed the process, so
it's a ocmmittee that decides, no voting, no need to get votes. You do
have to "prove" (it seems a fairly vague process) that there is a need for
such a newsgroup, people who make the effort to go to the proper newsgroup
and say they'd use it. Unless the RFD has faults, the process actually
happens pretty fast, either creating the newsgroup or rejecting it.

At the same time, the committee has been going through the existing
newsgroups, culling out the ones that havent' seen use in a long time.

I'm currently using both the UKFSN and Entanet NNTP servers with Pan.
That combination seems to play nicely together.

Really? I asked Demon (normally very helpful) to add
alt.comp.os.windows-8 repeatedly, with requests just going into a black
hole. How did you request this?

I'd say it's more to do with comp.* being part of the Big 8 usenet
hierarchies. Than any kind of all-powerful lobby.

I sent an email to helpdesk@demon.net asking them to add it. It took a
bit longer than the advertised 24 hours, but it's here now.

That's worth a try. I had real trouble getting the first-line agents to
understand what a newsgroup was, and they are normally pretty good.
This is the only beef I have with Demon.

Emailed them shortly after posting this, and received a phonecall this
morning to tell me the group had been added. I can't see it yet, so
maybe it's a propogation thing, or someone's mistyped, but once again
I'm 100% (ok: 99.9% for now) happy with Demon.

It took a day or so to get from Highwinds to Demon.

I can't tell you how many times we have nearly left Demon in
the last 20 years. Perhaps their new owners will let them get
their act together.

I still fail to see what all this off-topic spam has to do with the Apple
II. This initial off-topic cross-post by this Harris person doesn't seem to
be letting-up.

I think as a consequence of what has happened here, he should at least be
monitoring his thread and sending private mail to his fans asking them to
stop already!

Has anyone else had the same thoughts?

Experiences do vary, but I deal with a lot of ISPs on behalf of
customers, and I'm surprised how good Demon are, at every contact. I
wouldn't consider moving - not least for the superb spam filtering.

Companies do change. I used to hate O2 with such a vengance that my
hackles would rise when that gravelly voice came on the telly in an
advert. They they were taken over by Telephonica, and (again) I've been
surprised by how helpful they have been ever since. Wouldn't change.
