I thought I’d give it a try. I typed:
“The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog's back.”

and got: (if this gets through and anyone can read it)
“द्रुतकृष्णः शृगालः आलस्यस्य श्वः पृष्ठस्य उपरि कूर्दितवान्”

Then I translated the Sanskrit back to English, and got:
“The swift black fox jumped over the sloth dog's back.”

Sort of a start, i guess.

That one is beyond my font support - which is pretty rare.

Not bad - I wonder if brown is not a colour in Sanskrit and it's an
odd use of sloth but valid I goove although slothful would be more common.

Came thru on my iPad, and I’m surprised - first, that usenet supports it,
and second, that newstap (my client) supports it.

GNUS (Emacs) has no problem.
The message is marked as utf-8.

Looks fine with Lohit installed.

According to Peter Flass <peter_flass@yahoo.com>:

It's Unicode, encoded as UTF-8, so I would expect more often than not
it displays OK.

Sanskrit has roughly the same status in India as classical Latin in Europe,
lots of classic texts are written in it, and it's widely studied in school.
So there are plenty of training texts, although perhaps not so many using
colloquial language, hence lazy -> sloth.

I had to install the font Lohit (red in Sanskrit apparently) to get
it to display properly.
