Sometime in 1993 or 1994 CJL sent me a couple of RX50 diskettes with his
OS/8 for use on my DECmate. I was wondering if anyone knew about the
availability or this system (perhaps on bitsavers.org) as well as the
build tools/source around it. Thank you

under a "Hobbyist License".

Not quite true. There are separate licences for various OS/S some of
which DEC term "Hobbyist" and other which are pure non-commercial use
licences.
Sadly there are also some OS's for the PDP-11 for which DEC sold the
rights to Mentec Ltd and which its not possible to obtain licences for...
The "Hobbyist" program only appears to apply to VMS licences.
Not sure about the legal status of the TOPS-10 and TOPS-20 systems
floating around.

Right, it is called P?S8. But I think the OP is looking for a special
version of OS/8 for his system tailored by CJL.

That answer is not related to the question. You may be thinking of the
OpenVMS Hobbyist Program.

I believe Charles(?) still monitors alt.sys.pdp8.

Hi, Dave!
Bob Supnik, VP of Engineering at Digital at the time, arranged for a hobbyist
license for the 36 bit software back in the 1990s. When XKL acquired the
rights to the 36 bit IP from Digital, we grandfathered the hobbyist license.
(I ran XKL's pre/post-sales customer support organization at the time, and was
part of the discussion about this.)
