I'm wondering if any one has the Apple /// Quark disks that they could image?

There looks to be some images of two disks available online, 'Catalyst Data' disk and the 'Catalyst Installation' disk. However there looks like there should be a third disk which is the main boot disk that is labelled just 'Catalyst'

thanks
Rob

Hi, Rob.

You are hopefully aware that the Catalyst distribution diskettes are
copy-protected? Unless someone has cracked it, you'll need a Locksmith (or
equivalent) physical copy.

I have all (3) diskettes for Catalyst 2.1, with file dates of 4/85. My notes
suggest using Locksmith 5.0C to duplicate.

I suspect you have not seen this yet:

Yay - hopefully you can share with Rob!

That's great you have a copy of them. I have read that they have copy protection on them, lets see if we can work around that.

If you had an Applesauce, then that would be the best to image them with. If not, then we may need a NIB image of the disks. I think you can use ADTPro for that nowadays rather than SST, maybe David can chime in here.

I have read that it 're keys' original copy protected disks when you install them via Catalyst. Not too sure what its changing them to, but maybe it uses some of the SOS inbuilt protection but with a unique catalyst key. Lets see.

thanks
Rob

Nice work. Hopefully this will lead to a means for un-protecting Catalyst.

No Applesauce here, I'm afraid. Simplest thing would be to send you some
physical copies of the 'Catalyst Backup' diskette. IIRC, this has not been
modified during installation. I've sent copies to other folks and they were
able to use them.

Send me private e-mail with your mailing address and I'll queue this up.

Keep in mind that most of the "copy-protected" Apple /// disks need to
be copied with syncronized tracks. You will need a transfer tool that
can handle this.

Thus my suggestion about physical copies :-)

I was thinking if it uses the SOS inbuilt protection method for the boot disk, then with a nib image, I can extract the relevant volume numbers from the image and rebuild a working sync'd image.

Physical copies would be the best option though, I'll send you a message.

I have done some more digging around and found that the first disk in the WAP utilities collection has a version of catalyst with the protection removed. On side B is Catalyst v2.1 that seems to boot up, but needs other things setup. This may then be useful in combo with the original disks to get it going.
See here:
http://www.apple3.org/Software/wap/html/a3utilities.html
The description seems a bit different to what they actually are, but if you look at the disk images, and or boot them, you will see.

There seems like there was an article by Mel Astrahan describing how the software was deprotected. I don't seem to be able to find this on the AIII DVD. It would be great if someone had a copy of this, it would be an interesting read.

This is some text I found referring to it:
" Mel Ashtrahan has modified his How to Free Catalyst disk to handle Catalyst
2.1. Disk #52 will include the Catalyst 2.0 programs on one side and the 2.1 on
the other. A copy of his write up will be included with each order for the
disk. (The article is still available separately, at no charge, for those who
send a stamped, self addressed envelope with their request.) "

Apple /// things are welcome in this group. He's already done the easy
stuff, so now he's down to component or chip failures. Get an O-scope
and check to see if the clock line is getting pulsed on the CPU...
