“Kemurikusa” is a sci-fi anime apparently developed from an OAV from 2012 or so. In some undefined future post-apocalyptic world beings that look like cute red-headed girls live in a wrecked tram car in a wrecked city on a deserted island. The “girls” search continuously for water while they watch out for dangerous giant “bugs” that look like large, bulky robots with glowing red lines on them. The girls can destroy the bugs, but the bugs can also destroy the girls. The girls need the water to give to a “tree” of some sort that grows glowing green balls and glowing green “leaves” that the girls use as nourishment and also to destroy the bugs.

After fighting off two bugs the girls are filling a large fish tank with water when a human boy suddenly appears in the tank out of nowhere. The girls think that the boy is a “bug” and attack him, but while the girls can hurt the boy by hurling pieces of junk at him, the weapons that the girls use against bugs don’t work on the boy. The girls are also confused that the boy can speak and understand the girls, but the girls still believe that the boy is some strange type of bug and remain wary of him, even after the boy saves one of the girls from another bug attack.

This anime was created by the folks who brought “Kemono Friends” into the world so of course one of the girls has cat ears and use anime “cat talk” type speech mannerisms. For better or for worse there is no explanation of the situation or the characters. The girls work hard to be sickeningly cute and the boy is a clear example of how not to create a reasonable character via dialog. One could be polite and make the excuse that this is all supposed to be “allegorical”, but overall the first episode tries too hard to pander to the cute-furry fan to say that without smiling.

So I won’t be watching more and in fact this is the last new anime that I plan to try out in the Winter 2019 anime season. But if anyone else finds some “hidden gem” in the dung heap I may give it a try. Just remember to recommend it to me. My final rating for this show is “C”.

What you've described is a Tron/Reboot kind of setting. The kid's been
sucked into a virtual reality inside his extremely virus-infected
computer.

You may well be right, but I'm not going back to see what the explanation will be. Are you volunteering to find out? LOL

Well not unless I find a translated version of it somewhere.

Horrible Subs and at least one other have subtitled versions. Just check your usual BT libraries.

I suspect that's why the girls seem a bit simpleminded. They're only
programs after all.

I just thought of a great twist to that idea. Suppose that the girls are the viruses and the bugs are the anti-virus programs... And the boy is the user's bank data attempting to stay unaccessed...

Reminds me of the virtual world in Neuromancer where he finds himself on a
deserted beach with some kind of shelter and food supply laid on.
