“Rinshi!! Ekoda-chan” is back. This not quite slice-of-life, not quite gag comedy about a 24 year old women who spends most of her time on screen naked is now a 12 episode 5 minute anime. This time there is a gimmick – each episode stars a different voice actress and has a different director. After the first episode there was a fairly lengthy interview with the voice actress and the director. It appears that this will continue for the rest of the episodes.

“Ekoda-chan” is based upon a 4-koma manga series that examines the daily trials and tribulations of the idiosyncratic Ekoda-chan as she essentially complains non-stop about her life. Sometimes it’s quite funny, sometimes it just bizarre. You probably know someone like Ekoda-chan in real life, and unless that person is a family member you probably try to avoid her as much as possible.

The director of the first episode made an interesting comment at the beginning of the interview. He mentioned that he had been involved in other short, 4-koma-based series in the past and that they were never successful. So while he said that he would have preferred to do more episodes of this series, I suspect that he is just as happy to be able to “share the pain” with the other directors.

I won’t be watching more of this. It’s not bad, but it’s just not compelling in any manner. My final rating is “C”.
