I'm trying to revive my old Mac Classic that I've had kicking around for a
few years. I lost all my peripherals in a flood a few summers back, so I'm
starting from scratch when it comes to a keyboard and mouse. The prices
that people are asking on ebay for an apple Keyboard or mouse are a bit
more than I want to pay just to play around on my old Mac. Are there any
more affordable alternatives to the official Apple hardware? Are there
adapters that are available so I can use a standard PC keyboard or other
non-ADB equipment?

Have you seen the ADB-USB Wombat?
https://www.bigmessowires.com/usb-wombat/ Not sure how that compares to
prices on ADB keyboards and mice...

That looks like a fun device, I think I'd use it with an ADB keyboard
on a modern computer more than the other way around.

If you're having troubles locating a reasonably priced keyboard and
mouse, and are not picky about having the exact keyboard it came with,
contact me off-list. I have a number of ADB II keyboards and oval mice
available.

All,
The USB Wombat looks really fun, but it's about as expensive as sourcing
official Apple hardware.
I did find a DIY device that I may make an attempt to make. Anyone ever
built one of these?

I love that that device allows simultaneous usage on ADB and pre-ADB Macs!
I might have to build one just for that purpose for testing my
in-development games. Let us know how it goes if you try building one.

There have been cheaper devices than the Wombat, which only allow USB on
ADB Macs.

I have an extra ADB keyboard and mouse you can have for the price of
shipping. I'm in Oregon.
