I have a Mac IIci that I am trying to get running. I am hoping someone can help me with some info on an adapter so I could try an older PC LCD monitor. I also need to get a keyboard. I have a 2002 gateway monitor. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Electrically, the IIci is capable of producing SVGA-type signals which can be fed into a standard PC-type monitor. The physical connector is different, however, and the Mac uses a different (proprietary) method of identifying the monitor's capabilities, rather than reading the EDID record over the DDC channel as PCs do.

Mac-to-VGA adapters do exist, and were actually pretty popular back in the day so should still be straightforward to obtain. They usually have a set of DIP switches on top to tell the Mac what to do.

I’m fairly certain the IIci uses “sync-on-green” as opposed to composite sync. Some PC monitors supported this, others didn’t. I have seen LCD monitors that supported it.

If it does support Sync-On-Green, This list (initially started to help
people who have a Playstation 2 connect it to a traditional monitor) should
help http://ps-2.kev009.com/sog/

Yes, Back in the early 90s, Apple's 14" monitors included their traditional
(for Apple) Trinitron monitor, the Apple Color Plus monitor, and the Apple
Basic Color monitor. The first two were Apple monitors and worked just
fine with the IIci. The Basic Color Monitor was a rebadged, extremely
limited, VGA monitor, and would not work with the IIci.

On the other hand, the Viewsonic 15e worked just fine with the IIci.

The lesson is that some old VGA monitors (and LCDs) support sync-on-green
and some don't. Even some sold by Apple don't support it...

Forgot to mention, here are some images of an adapter that was fairly
common, has the virtue of having the DIP switch settings printed on the
adapter itself, and worked well with the old Macs. It sold under a number
of names, such as Macfly, or UniMacfly. It was also the adapter Viewsonic
would send on request, if you purchased one of their monitors and asked for
a Mac adapter.

I was finally able to locate a reasonably priced adapter and ordered one
today! Now I will be looking for a keyboard and mouse.

Thanks for the info

thanks again for the info previously. I got the adapter and powered the
system up thinking the monitor would display the startup, but the monitor
stays in sleep mode. So I think I need to get a mouse or keyboard, so I
can see if the unit works. I am using a Gateway FDP1530 as the monitor. I
have been to a bunch of flea markets, but it looks like Apple stuff is hard
to find! Have a good one.

The Mac IIci will power up just fine without a mouse or keyboard attached.

What settings did you use for the video adapter? The Mac IIci built-in video only supports certain settings.

the adapter instructions had 10 pins and I have the 1,3,4,5 pins on the on
position. Monitor stays in power savings mode. It is powering up ok and
staying on, but no display.

But what mode do your instructions say 1,3,4,5 represents?

The first mode I’d try is 640x480 since tons of LCD monitors will support that even at the Mac rather than VGA frequencies.

yeah it was 512x364...also just tried all 15 variations. I think it may be
looking for a keystroke or mouse movement to come out of power savings
mode. I even plugged my older pc in, trying to switch the cables real
quick to the apple while it was out of sleep and as soon as i disconnected
it went right into sleep again. (yellow light on power button, instead of
green)

The Mac IIci predates so its internal video doesn’t support the 512x384 resolution, which was introduced by the Mac LC and its 12-inch display.

640x480 is really going to be your only bet for a Mac IIci, at least for its internal video, unless you have a Macintosh Portrait Display or equivalent (such as a Radius Full Page Display/gs—the 75Hz model, not the previous models).

ok thanks again for the help..I saw another page of the manual for the
adapter and tried all 6 mode settings for 640x480 and the monitor is still
in power savings mode. I may try and buy a mouse...Ill let you know if that
works.. If you are looking at the back case what is the port to the far
right?

When you say the machine powers on—do you hear the startup chime? And the green light at the front of the case is on? Macs of this vintage often need new capacitors, and may not power on without them.

Monitors didn’t have power saving modes back then. If the computer is on and functioning, it will be driving the monitor. If there isn’t a valid startup disk, it’ll show a gray screen with a blinking question mark.

Does your IIci have an extra video card installed? If so, you should plug your monitor into that. For example, the IIci in this picture has a video card installed in the right-most slot (in addition to the built-in video connector at the center-bottom of the case): http://www.vectronicscollections.org/apple/images/macintoshi ici/msnap2.jpg

I am using a Gateway monitor from like 1992 with the adapter.

More likely it doesn’t support sync on green.

Do you have a LCD monitor with VGA input? If you do, try that.

I just bought a NEC AccuSync LCD17V-BK 17-inch LCD Monitor on Amazon for
$7, including shipping! Most posts I have seen are people using a
multicync, and this one is accusync, but I am crossing my fingers! Also
for $7 can't go too bad. Amazon guy has 2 others also if anyone is
looking.

Did you turn the Mac off while changing the DIP switches?

The Mac only "reads" the type of monitor connected when it is turned on.
If you change the switches on the fly, or change the switch settings, then
restart (warm boot), the change will be ignored. You need to actually power
up afresh after each change.

I got my mac IIci finally working with a Samsung monitor, and it boots up
but display an error code "0000000F 00007FFF" Researching what this error
is, and wondering if I would be able to boot up with a 3.5", and where I
would get one.

This is a generic exception code, which I think indicates an inability to load System files. In other words, it couldn't read the hard disk or the filesystem is corrupted.

These old Macs usually came with a type of HDD which suffered from "stiction" in the main spindle bearing - so the drive might simply have failed to spin up. Give the machine a good slap, and you might hear it start working. In that case, give it another try.

thanks for the reply Jonathan. I tried the slap with no success. I have a
2nd one that powers up and doesn't display anything on the monitor. Should
I try to swap hard drives with the spare maybe?

That's certainly worth trying. IIRC, these machines are all easy to open and the HDD/FDD are in a lift-out cage together, secured by a spring catch. You'll only need to detach Molex and ribbon cables.

ok swapped hard drives and still same error. When you smack the computer,
can I target a specific area? I may end up just selling these two for
parts and keeping an eye out at yard sales. At least I have the monitor
issue working for when I find another one!

On my IIcx, almost any area above or beside the HDD tended to work. The idea is simply to jostle the spindle bearing so that it unsticks.

However it's also very likely that you have bad capacitors in both machines. That condition is often known to disable the SCSI controller until it's fixed. Since you have them open, now is the time to inspect. Look for bulging tops and dark brown leaks, but don't assume absence of evidence is evidence of absence - a few capacitors seem to fail silently.

Ok thanks a lot. I am going to keep working on them, and I'll let you know
if I get one running. Would be cool if I did because I got a huge box of
programs with them also.

Observations:

- Your HDD ribbon cable isn't fully seated.

- That is indeed the type of drive that suffers from stiction.

- Your camera has focused on the nearest components, leaving the m/board capacitors out of focus.

- Many of the capacitors are in any case hidden by the PSU and HDD cage, as is the PRAM battery.

To properly inspect the capacitors, you'll need to remove the HDD cage, its support bracket, the PSU, and all expansion cards. But this should only require undoing one screw.

In addition to what’s been suggested check that that the RAM SIMMs are still fully seated  and without any corroded contacts.

From your photo it looks like all 8 RAM slots have SIMMs.  You can remove the 4 SIMMs in Bank B, the 4 slots on the left (looking from the front of the case to the back ports) and just use the SIMMs in Bank A for testing purposes. See page 17 below:

However it's also very likely that you have bad capacitors in both machines.  That condition is often known to disable the SCSI controller until it's fixed.  Since you have them open, now is the time to inspect.  Look for bulging tops and dark brown leaks, but don't assume absence of evidence is evidence of absence - a few capacitors seem to fail silently.

thanks Glen and Jonathan. I heated the hard drive up with a hair dryer,
and it booted up, lol! I am afraid to turn it off now tho to work on the
other one. Also I just ordered a mouse, and will be looking for a keyboard
now I guess.
