The following might contain some spoilers about the show "Kino's
Journey: The beautiful world." Spoilers don't really bother me that
much, but they seem to send some people into just a perfect tizzy, So
this is your final warning: avert thine eyes and/or press the "next"
button in your usenet reader post-haste what to my best guess some
people might consider a spoiler.

Recently I have been watching this on funimation.com, and at least so
far have not come up against their paywall, and have been quite enjoying it.

At about episode 10 or 11, I think, they replayed the episode "Land of
Adults," with pretty much the same script that was used in that episode
from the original series.

At first I thought the writers and/or producers or someone was just
being lazy, however, this episode provides several important points
about Kino's backstory: 1)That she is, indeed, a girl, 2)Where she is
originally from, 3) why she started out as a traveler, 4)how she got the
name "Kino", 5)How she met Hermes, and other stuff I am probably not
thinking of right now for the benefit of those that have not seen the
original series.

However, if this is indeed the purpose, it would make more sense to have
this episode be one of the early ones like in the original series.

The following is a quote from the comments section of the glass
reflection (grarkada) review of the original series by someone who
apparantly speaks enough Japanese to watch it in its raw form:

"Actually, for those of us who watched it in Japanese, it was perfectly
normal to assume that Kino was a boy until we saw the episode with her
backstory. Yes, she was voiced by a woman, but the voice she used was
that of a young boy, (even if we knew it was actually a woman voicing
her, that doesn't mean anything, for instance Edward Elric from FMA is
also voiced by a woman and nobody doubts he's a boy)
She also started using the masculine personal pronoun "boku" when
referring to herself, as opposed to neutral "watashi" or feminine
"atashi". She adopted the pronoun when she assumed Kino's identity,
together with taking his name and his coat.
I for one was quite surprised when they revealed she was a girl. Others
may have had some inklings from the beginning, but until her background
was revealed, her gender was at best ambiguous, indications pointing
strongly towards a boy."

I think even though English does not have masculine and feminine
versions of "I" and that in the English-dubbed version she is also
voiced by a woman, both in the original and The Beautiful World, I
think, it is reasonable until the episode showing her bavck story to
assume she is male.
