Apple IIgs mouse movement erases pixels on the screen in hi-res modes [message #354651] Tue, 17 October 2017 21:22 Go to next message

At first I though it was a software concern with the image of Deluxe Paint that I downloaded. Moving the mouse across the screen would simply erase anything it passed over. Erases the loaded image, erases the menus, everything. But the menus still work when I click where I think they would have been..

Moving on to getting some games, I got Questron II for the IIgs. Same thing! moving the mouse erases the pixels it passes over. Again all the menus and screen clicks work.

So I am left thinking this is a hardware issue. The IIgs currently has an Apple memory card with 1MB of chips on it. I have a 4MB card coming in the mail, but the more I think about it...

Is maybe the original IIgs monitor I am using having trouble with redraw after mouse movement? During regular IIgs desktop usage without hi-res graphics there is no issue. AppleWorks IIgs works fine, for example.

Anyone ever see something like this?

"Actually, a better solution is to select the EasyAccess icon, press Apple-I,
and click the "Inactive" checkbox, then close the window. Do the same
for the CloseView icon. This will disable these troublemaking INITs."

Brilliant, and I''m pretty sure this post was from Eric Shepherd. I am not a fan of SheppyWare!!!!

Did you shift-boot?
Which OS version?
Which IIgs ROM? ROM3 can generate more cursor drawing issues with old software than the ROM01.

I am very new to the IIgs and hadn't heard of shift-boot before reading your post.

The motherboard is an early ROM01. I say early because it has the keyboard socket installed from the factory in case the motherboard was installed in a IIe/IIgs upgrade.

After my last post, I found I had to re-enable EasyAccess and leave CloseView disabled. Now all seems to be working correctly.
