Sorry, the text's in Japanese but it says that a weekly magazine that lasts
for 70 issues with each issue coming with a componet that you can eventually
assemble into a functional robot.

You are talking about waiting over a year to patiently collect all the parts
you need and what if you miss an issue? Wouldn't people that missed Issue 1
automatically not be interested so drop-off rate must be extremely high.

I have seen these types of magazine at Kinokuniya where you get one
component each issue and you just keep assembling it until it's finished.

It's 830 yen per issue so let's say it's $12 in U.S. Multiply that by 70
and you get $840 plus almost 10% in sales taxes. I am sure it'd be much
cheaper to buy a finished product if it's available.

Check the lecture given by Ohno's boyfriend to Saki about assembling
models in Genshiken, in volume 2 I believe.
Assembling a model invests more emotional energy than buying
a pre-assembled model or figure. This can result in many tears
if your model carelessly handled by Saki. This resulted eventually
in Saki's excellent Cos-play.
As for the magazine it is easier to spend 840 yen at a time. In the
USA people might have a problem with it but back issues can usually be
acquired at an inordinate expenditure.

Anyway no one is going to be selling Astroboy level robots over
the counter soon. Look at Ambassador Atom and realize we are not near
that level of technology yet and AA is an obsolete model. Atumu is
robot at a level of fantasy likely beyond the reach of tomorrow's
tech so you are getting a model of a robot even if it does a bit more
than a plain model.
